Meaning · English

By going on pilgrimage, I undid your presence everywhere. By meditating, I undid your being past the reach of mind. By praising you, I undid your being past the reach of words. Forgive, always, these three faults.

The avadhuta Dattatreya turns to the self he has been singing about and asks pardon. Three words carry it. Vyapakata is all-pervasiveness, from a root meaning to reach or fill. Dhyana is meditation, from a root meaning to contemplate. Aparadha is a fault, literally a step gone wrong. Kshama, forgive, comes from a root meaning to bear with. Each clause names one act of worship and the harm it does. Pilgrimage means travelling to a place, and that treats the self as somewhere else, though the text says it fills everything. Meditation takes the self as an object held in the mind, though the text says it lies past the mind. Praise puts the self into words, though it lies past speech. Every honest act of devotion has an edge, and the self has none. The question underneath is how a person can worship what cannot be placed, thought or spoken. Dattatreya does not say to stop. He admits the fault, names it exactly and asks to be borne with. The word nityam, always, shows he expects to keep doing it. What the verse asks of the listener is to keep the practice and drop the pride in it, knowing the pilgrim, the thinker and the singer all fall short.

Someone frames a photograph of the sea and hangs it on the wall. The frame has four edges and the sea has none. Going, thinking and speaking each draw an edge round what has none, and the singer begs pardon for the framing while still loving the picture.

1. Tonight, spend five minutes with someone or something you love, such as a parent, a child or a quiet street. Say one sentence aloud about what they mean to you. 2. Notice what that sentence left out. Do not fix it. 3. When you next pray, sing or sit quietly, finish by saying silently, "forgive the smallness of my words." Then stop and let a few breaths pass without adding anything.

A daughter has been asked to speak at her father's memorial. She sits with a blank page the night before. Every line she writes is true and every line is too small. He was more than 'kind' and more than 'patient.' She is tempted to tear the page up, or to pile on adjectives until it sounds large enough. The verse gives her a third course. She can write the small, true sentences and let them be small. She can say aloud that words fall short of him, and still speak. The shortfall becomes part of the tribute, not a reason for silence. Dattatreya does the same with the self that is past speech: he praises, names the fault, and asks pardon. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: the people and moments we love most are the ones we describe worst. The verse does not say the self is only like a dear father, and it does not make the evening easier. It does not lift her grief. It only frees her from the demand that her words be enough.
