Tell me, Mother, when shall I, a seeker of learning, drink the water that washed your feet, tinged red with lac? It is the cause of poetry even in those born mute. When does it become the betel juice of Speech's lotus mouth?

The verse is one long question, and the question is a longing. Three words carry it. Alaktaka is the red lac dye women painted on their feet; the water has taken its colour. Nirnejana is washing, from nij, to cleanse, so the water is what ran off her feet. Vidyarthi is one who wants learning, from vidya, knowledge, and artha, seeking. The poet calls himself that. Now the clauses. He asks the Mother to say when he will drink this red water. He says why it matters: it is the cause of poetry, even for people mute by nature. Then he asks when that water takes on the nature of the betel juice in the lotus mouth of Vani, the goddess of Speech. Betel chewed by Vani reddens her mouth, and the same red is on the water from the Mother's feet. The picture says that the Mother's footwater and Speech's own taste are one. Why teach it here? The hymn has just named Speech as one of her forms. The poet now asks where words come from. The hymn answers that they come from her, washed down from her feet. The verse asks for no result and promises none. It says when, and leaves the answer to her. The commentators read the mute as those with no learning at all, so the water gives voice where there was none.

A cloth dyed red is rinsed in a bowl of clear water. The water turns red too and carries the dye with it. The footwater is like that bowl: it carries the colour and nature of the feet it touched, which the verse says is the source of speech itself.
