Meaning · English

Four triangles of Shiva and five of Shakti, the nine root-causes sprung from Shambhu, joined with the eight-petalled and sixteen-petalled lotuses, the three circles and the three lines: so your dwelling's corners are made, forty-four.

Three words carry the verse. Srikantha means 'blue-throated', a name of Shiva, so the four srikanthas are four triangles pointing up, his. Sivayuvati means 'Shiva's young women', his Shakti, so the five are triangles pointing down, hers. Mulaprakriti means 'root-nature', the first stuff from which things come. Four and five make nine, and the poet calls these nine the root-causes that came from Shambhu, Shiva. Shiva and Shakti are woven into one figure. Then the poet adds the rest of her dwelling: a ring of eight petals, a ring of sixteen, three circles, and three lines. All of it comes to forty-four corners, and the poet says they have 'come to completion' around her. Tradition reads this as the Sri Chakra, the Goddess's diagram, and the text does not go beyond naming its parts. The question behind the verse is where she lives and what that house is made of. The poet answers with a plan. Her home is built of Shiva and Shakti together, and the whole of it is offered to her as praise. The commentators take the count as a careful, deliberate structure, not decoration.

Think of a kolam drawn on a doorstep with rice flour: upward and downward triangles cross each other, ringed by petals and circles, so one unbroken pattern holds many small corners. The nine triangles are that pattern; the Goddess is the one who lives inside it.
