Meaning · English

Daughter of the snow mountain, even the lords of poets, Brahma and the rest, can scarcely take the measure of your beauty. Longing to look on it, the women of heaven go in mind to a place beside Shiva, which austerities rarely win.

Three words carry it. Kavindra means a lord among poets, one whose business is finding words for things. Tulayitum means to weigh, from tula, a pair of scales. Tapas means austerity, literally heat: the discipline of years. The poet says the best word-makers, Brahma among them, can barely get her beauty onto the scale. Whatever they put there falls short. The second half turns to the heavenly women. Eager to see her, they go in mind to sayujya with Shiva, a shared state, from yuj, to yoke. That is the very place austerity struggles to reach. So longing for her beauty does what hard discipline often cannot. The hymn has just described her inner ascent and her house of triangles. Here it admits that description fails. The question behind it is whether praise can ever be complete. The poet's answer is that it cannot, and that the attempt is still the offering. The Goddess is shown as joined to Shiva, so desire for her beauty ends at his side. The commentators read the verse as praise by confession of limit. It asks nothing of the listener except to hear how large the subject is.

A child kneels at the shore with a small cup, trying to carry the sea home. Each cup holds a little and is still true water. The poets' words are the cup, her beauty is the sea, and the verse admits that no cup is large enough.
