Meaning · English

A man very old, dull-eyed, clumsy even in love-play: if your sidelong glance falls on him, young women run after him by the hundreds, braids coming loose, garments slipping, girdles snapping, silk falling away.

Three Sanskrit words carry the picture. Apanga is the outer corner of the eye, so her look is a sidelong one, cast from the corner. Aloka is a looking, a sight that lands on something. Together they make the glance that falls on a person. Jada means dull or inert, like a lump that does not stir. Narma is play, the teasing talk between lovers. The poet first builds a man with every disadvantage. He is very old. His eyes have no spark. He is slow even at the light talk of courtship. Then comes the turn: if her glance falls on him, young women follow him in their hundreds. They run so hard that their hair comes undone, their clothes slip, their girdles snap and their silks drop. The scene is comic on purpose. It shows people losing all composure. The question behind it is where attraction comes from. The poet has just praised her beauty as beyond measure. Now he shows what her look does. The man brings nothing of his own, so whatever draws the women comes from her glance alone. The poem teaches that her grace is the source of charm, and that it needs nothing in the one it touches. It asks the listener to see her look as the real power in the scene, and to see the crowd of women as only its sign.

A bare stone wall at dusk is grey and plain all day. Then the last ray of the setting sun touches it and it glows, and people stop to look. The wall added nothing. The light did it all. The old man is the wall, and her glance is the light.
