In earth, fifty-six rays; in water, fifty-two; in fire, sixty-two; in air, fifty-four; in sky, seventy-two; in mind, sixty-four. Above all these rays, however many, stand your two lotus feet.

The poet counts. He names six places and gives each a number of rays: earth 56, water 52, fire 62, air 54, sky 72, and mind 64. Added up, they come to 360, a full round. The text gives the counts; the sum is plain arithmetic. Two words carry the verse. Mayukha means a ray, a beam of light. Padambuja is the foot-lotus: pada is the foot, ambuja is 'born of water', the lotus. Upari means above. The five elements and the mind are the whole range of what can be touched, breathed, seen or thought. The poet says each has its rays, and that together they make a complete circle. Then he turns the last line on all of it: above even these are her feet. Nothing counted reaches them. Why say this here? The verses before it praise her beauty and her glance. This one shows how far her presence runs. It fills every level of the world, from solid earth to the mind, and still she stands beyond what it fills. Her feet are the poet's resting place, above the count. The commentators read the numbers as the working of her power through these levels. The verse asks for no procedure, only that the reader see how wide the praise goes.

Sunlight comes through a tall tree and lies on the ground in many bright patches, each a different size. You could count them all. The sun itself is not among them. It stays above the canopy. The patches are the counted rays, and her feet are the sun above them.
