Poison and Nectar
Ashtavakra Gita 1.2
Meaning · English
If you want freedom, my child, shun the objects of the senses as you would poison. Take forgiveness, straightness, compassion, contentment and truth, and drink them as you would nectar.
Four words carry the teaching. Vishaya is a sense object: whatever the eye, ear, tongue, skin or nose reaches toward and then holds on to. Arjava is straightness, from the word for a line with no bend, so a person whose speech and heart agree. Tosha is contentment, being satisfied with what is already in hand. Satya is truth, from sat, what is. Ashtavakra answers Janaka's question about freedom in two halves. First he says to treat sense objects the way anyone treats poison. The object is not the trouble. The grasping that follows it is, because grasping ties a person to the thing. Then he says to take five qualities in the way a thirsty person takes water: forgiveness, which lets go of old injuries, straightness, compassion, contentment and truth. Poison is refused and nectar is drunk, and both are done by choice. He is answering Janaka's question about how freedom is reached. He calls Janaka tata, a word an elder uses for someone dear, so the advice is meant kindly. It asks the listener to stop reaching for what binds and to take up what steadies the mind.
A bottle of green cleaner sits under the kitchen sink, the same colour as the juice a child likes. A parent moves it to a high shelf and pours the child a glass of water. Sense objects are the bottle, bright and tempting. Forgiveness and truth are the water.
1. Today, notice one moment when your hand reaches for something out of habit, such as the phone, a snack or a purchase. Pause for three breaths before you touch it. 2. Pick one small grudge. Say silently, once, that you let it go. 3. Before bed, recall one thing you said today that was not quite true. Tomorrow, say the plain version to that person. 4. Name one thing you already have and are glad of.
A woman sits on her bed at eleven at night. Her brother has sent a sharp message about their mother's care. Her thumb hovers over the reply button, and she is tired, which makes the reaching worse. The teaching would change this moment in steps. She sees the pull toward the quick, stinging answer as the reaching the text calls poison. She puts the phone face down. She asks what is true: he is frightened too. She asks what forgiveness would let her write. In the morning she sends two plain, honest sentences and nothing more. Ordinary experience confirms that restraint is weakest when a person is tired, and the choice is easier after rest. The text asks for the turning away and the drinking, and it names the five qualities it wants taken in. It does not promise that her brother will answer kindly, that her worry for her mother will lift, or that the care itself will get easier. Where her mother is ill, the doctor's advice still stands and still has to be followed.
