Meaning · English
You are not earth, not water, not fire, not air, and not space. To be free, know yourself as the witness of all these, whose very form is awareness. If you set the body apart and rest in awareness, then right now you will be happy, peaceful and free from bondage.
Ashtavakra takes apart what a person usually calls "I". Earth, water, fire, air and space are the five elements, the stuff the body and the world are made of. He says you are none of them. You are their sakshin, the witness. The word means one who sees with his own eyes, a watcher who takes no part in what is watched. This witness is chit, awareness itself, from the root meaning to perceive. It is not a thing that has awareness. Awareness is its form. The second line gives the practice, and it is small. Set the body apart, which means see it as something that is known, not as the knower. Then rest in awareness. The word is rest, not strive. Bandha, bondage, is from the root meaning to tie. The text treats it as a knot of mistaken identity. Mukta, free, is the knot seen as loosened. This answers Janaka's question about how freedom comes. Ashtavakra says it is not earned by a long road. Freedom is already so, and only the mistaken identity hides it. That is why he says "right now". The verse asks the listener to notice who is aware of the body, and to stop there.
A person stands on a station platform while trains thunder through, one after another, loud and fast. The person is not any of the trains. The trains are body, breath, warmth and the space around them, all passing. The one who stands and sees them go is the witness.
1. Sit for two minutes today, in any chair, with your eyes open or closed. 2. Notice the weight of your body on the seat, the warmth of your hands, the air going in and out. Say quietly to yourself, "this is seen." 3. Then notice what is doing the seeing. Do not try to describe it. Stay with that for a minute. 4. When a thought pulls you away, note it as one more thing seen, and return.
A man sits outside an operating theatre while his father is inside. His heart thumps, his hands are cold, his mind runs through every bad outcome. He is all of it at once, a body in a panic. The teaching would change this one step at a time. First he notices the heartbeat, and in noticing it he is already a little apart from it. Ordinary experience bears this out: a feeling named is a feeling held more loosely. Next he sees that the cold hands, the fear and the pictures in his mind are all things that come into view. Then, as the verse says, he sets the body apart and rests as the one who sees. In the text's teaching, that seer is awareness itself, and it is not shaken by what it watches. The limit is plain. This does not make his father well, does not remove the fear or the grief if it comes, and does not replace the surgeon, a doctor, or a friend sitting beside him.
