No Label Fits You

Ashtavakra Gita 1.5

Meaning · English

You are not a brahmin or any other class, not in a stage of life, not something the eye can see. You are unattached, without form, the witness of everything. Be happy.

Three words carry the verse. Varna is class, the birth-group a person is sorted into. Ashrama is a stage of life: student, householder, forest-dweller, renouncer. Asanga means unattached, from sanga, clinging or sticking; nothing that happens sticks to you. Nirakara means without form, without a shape that could be drawn. Ashtavakra goes clause by clause. You are not your class, and not your stage of life; these are roles the body and society hand out. You are not what the eye can reach, since the eye only meets things with shape. You are unattached, so what passes through you leaves you as it found you. You are without form, and you are the witness of the whole world, the one who sees it all. Janaka had asked how freedom is won. Ashtavakra answers by taking away every title Janaka might hold on to, even king, even seeker. What is left is the seer, and the seer is already free. The last word, be happy, asks the listener to stop adding labels and rest in what remains.

Think of a coat check at a theatre. You hand over your coat, hat and bag, and each gets a numbered tag. None of the tags is you. They only tell the staff what is hanging where. The labels of class and life-stage are those tags; the one holding them is the witness.

1. Tonight, write down five labels others use for you: your job, your family role, your age, your community, your reputation. 2. Read them slowly, one at a time, and after each ask: who is aware of this label? 3. Sit quietly for two minutes with that question and no answer. 4. Tomorrow, notice once when a label makes you tense, and recall the list.

A man stands at his father's funeral, and the priest asks him to step forward as the eldest son. Suddenly he is all duties: eldest son, the one who must hold the family together, the one who must not cry. Under the role, he is simply a person who has just lost his father. The verse, as the Ashtavakra Gita teaches it, would loosen the grip of the title. Step by step, he sees that eldest son is a name given to him, and that something in him watches himself doing the part. From that seat, he can carry out the rites without becoming only the role, and he can let his sorrow be there too. Ordinary experience bears out that a person who is only a role grows brittle, while one who knows he is more than it bends. The verse does not take away the grief, the duties or the tiredness of that day, and it does not replace the people who can sit with him, or a doctor if his body gives way under the strain.
