Free of Mind's Weather

Ashtavakra Gita 1.6

Meaning · English

Virtue and vice, pleasure and pain belong to the mind, not to you, all-pervading one. You are not the doer. You are not the enjoyer. You are free, and always have been.

Four words carry this. Dharma and adharma are right action and wrong action, virtue and vice. Manasa means "of the mind", of manas, the part that thinks, feels and weighs. Kartr is the doer, the one who acts. Bhoktr is the enjoyer, the one who receives the fruit of the act, sweet or bitter. Mukta is the free, the released. Ashtavakra says that virtue and vice, joy and sorrow all arise in the mind and are held there. They come and go like weather in it. He then addresses Janaka as vibhu, all-pervading: the self is too wide to sit inside any of them. The self does not do the deed and does not taste its result. It is free, and Ashtavakra says always, with no moment before which it was bound. This answers Janaka's question about how freedom is won. The teaching is that freedom is not won, because the self was never tied. Bondage was the belief that the self is the one who sins, succeeds, grieves and rejoices. It asks the listener to hear this as a statement about himself, and to look for the one who knows each good deed, bad deed, pleasure and pain as it passes, and is not any of them.

A film plays on a cinema screen: a house burns, a flood rises, a wedding is danced. When the lights come up, the screen is dry, unburned and unmarked. The scenes are the mind's virtue, vice, joy and sorrow. The screen is the self that the text says they never touch.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and bring to mind one thing you feel guilty or proud about today. 2. Say to yourself plainly: "This is a thought in the mind." Notice its pull in the body, then notice that you are the one aware of it. 3. Do the same once with a small pleasure or annoyance tomorrow, as it happens. 4. Each time, notice how long the feeling stays when it is only watched.

A retired schoolteacher lies awake replaying a sharp word she said to her sister at lunch. Her chest is tight. The guilt feels like a verdict on who she is. The verse would change that moment in steps. First, the guilt is seen as something that has arisen, with its pictures and its replayed sentence, together with the tightness in the chest. Second, it is seen that she is aware of all this, and that awareness itself is not sharp, guilty or sorry. Third, the same holds for the earlier pleasure of being right. Ashtavakra teaches that good and bad, joy and sorrow are the mind's, and that the one who knows them is free. Ordinary experience confirms only a small part of this: a tired mind makes guilt louder, and feelings often shift once they are looked at. The verse does not promise that the grief or regret will go, and it does not replace a doctor when sleeplessness or low mood goes on.
