The Seer Seen Elsewhere
Ashtavakra Gita 1.7
Meaning · English
You are the one witness of everything, and always as good as free. This alone is your bondage: that you look upon the witness as someone other than yourself.
Three words carry the verse. Drashta means the seer, from the root drish, to see. Bandha means bondage, from bandh, to tie. Itara means other, another. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that he is the one seer of all that appears: bodies, thoughts, the court, the kingdom. Then he says Janaka is always close to freedom, as good as free. The wording is gentle because the freedom is not a distant prize. It is already the nature of the seer. Then comes the diagnosis. Bondage is a single mistake: taking the seer to be something else. The mind says, 'There is a world, and there is me, a small figure in it, and somewhere beyond me a witness I must reach.' Ashtavakra says that last part is the knot. The witness is not far off and not another. It is what is looking now. Janaka had asked how freedom is won. Ashtavakra answers that nothing needs winning, only this mistaken seeing needs ending. So the verse asks Janaka to stop treating the one who sees as one more thing seen, and to notice that nothing seen can be the seer.
A man hunts through every room for his spectacles, checking drawers, coats and the kitchen shelf, while they sit on his nose. The searching is the trouble. What he looks for is what he looks with. The seer is that nearest, which no search can find as another object.
1. Once today, for about a minute, sit still and notice a sound, such as a fan, traffic or a voice. 2. Then notice that you are aware of the sound. Ask, 'Who is hearing this?' 3. Try to find that hearer as an object, like the sound. Note that you cannot point to it. 4. Do the same with one passing worry later in the day. Notice the worry is seen, and something is seeing it.
A woman stands on a railway platform at dusk. Her train is cancelled, her phone is at four percent, and her jaw is tight with anger. She has been telling herself that she is a person to whom bad things happen. Ashtavakra's teaching would change the moment in small steps. First, the anger is noticed as something present, not as the whole of her. Second, the one noticing is found to be untouched by the cancelled train, as a room is untouched by the weather outside the window. Third, she acts, perhaps by asking at the desk or finding another route, from that steadier place. Ordinary experience confirms part of this: a feeling named and watched usually grips less hard. The text claims more, that the watcher is the self and is already free. It does not promise the train will come, the anger will not return, or that grief and illness will lift. It is no substitute for a doctor where one is needed.
