The Snake of Doership
Ashtavakra Gita 1.8
Meaning · English
"I am the doer": this is the great black serpent of self-regard, and it has bitten you. "I am not the doer": drink the nectar of that trust, and be happy.
Ashtavakra uses three words. Kartā means doer, from the root kṛ, to do. Ahaṃmāna is I-conceit: ahaṃ is "I", māna is measuring or puffing up, so it is the habit of measuring everything by "I did it, it is mine". Viśvāsa is trust, a settled confidence, not a passing hope. Amṛta is nectar, literally "not dying". The clauses run like a bite and its cure. The belief "I am the doer" is a great black snake, and Janaka has been bitten by it. Its venom is the feeling of carrying every act, every result and every failure on one's own back. The cure is not an effort but a trust: "I am not the doer." Ashtavakra calls it nectar and tells Janaka to drink it. The reason is in the verses before. Janaka asked how freedom is won. Ashtavakra answers that the self is the witness, never the doer, and so was never bound. The only thing standing between Janaka and that is the conviction of doership. It asks nothing of the body or the day's work. It asks the listener to put down one claim and rest in trust.
A toddler in the back seat holds a toy steering wheel and turns it hard at every bend, certain he is driving. The car goes on by its own engine and the road. The toy wheel is the sense of "I am doing this", and the car is the whole movement of life.
1. Today, listen for the words "I did", "I made" or "I ruined" in your own speech or thoughts. Count them until evening. 2. When one comes, pause for one breath and add: "Hands, mind and many causes were at work. I am the one who watches." 3. Keep doing the task in front of you as before. 4. At night, sit for five minutes and recall one moment where the claim loosened. Notice what your shoulders and jaw were doing.
At three in the morning a young mother sits by her feverish baby. One thought keeps circling: if she had noticed sooner, none of this would have happened. Her chest tightens and her thinking narrows to that one line. The text teaches that the self is not the doer. Acts happen through body, mind and a thousand causes, and the one who witnesses them stands apart. Taken as Ashtavakra gives it, the thought "I alone caused this" loses its grip. She still measures the dose, holds the baby, watches the breathing and calls the doctor when the fever asks for it. What drops away is the heavy claim of ownership over every outcome, past and future. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: at night, tired and afraid, self-blame makes the mind smaller and the hands less steady. The limit is plain. This teaching does not lower the fever, remove the fear or replace a doctor. It speaks to the weight of "I am the one who did it", not to the illness itself.
