Fire of Certainty

Ashtavakra Gita 1.9

Meaning · English

Burn the thick forest of ignorance with the fire of one settled certainty: "I am one, pure awareness." Free of sorrow, be happy.

Three words carry the teaching. Niscaya is certainty, a conviction that has stopped wavering; its root sense is something fixed in place, not a passing opinion. Ajnana is ignorance, literally not-knowing, and the text pictures it as a dense forest. Shoka is sorrow. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that one fire clears the forest: the firm knowing "I am one, pure awareness." One means there is no second thing, no rival or owner or doer standing beside the witness. Pure means nothing stains it. Awareness is what knows every thought and event without being any of them. The forest is the tangle of mistaken ideas about who one is. The text does not say the trees are cut one by one. It says they burn. Once the certainty holds, the sorrow that grew in that forest has nowhere to stand, and happiness is what remains. The verse comes after Ashtavakra has named the two knots: taking the witness for something other than oneself, and taking oneself for the doer. Janaka asked how knowledge is won. The answer is that it is not built up from outside. What is asked of the listener is to hold this one conviction until it is settled, and to let it do the burning.

On a cold morning, fog lies thick over a field and hides the road, the fence, the trees. Nobody fights it. The sun stands up, and the fog thins and is gone. The sun is the certainty, the fog is the ignorance, and the field was there the whole time.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with the lights low and say quietly, "I am the one who knows this," about whatever you notice: a sound, a worry, the chair. 2. When a worry arrives, note that it was seen, and that you are what saw it. 3. Tomorrow, at the first moment of irritation, pause for one breath and ask, "Who is aware of this?" 4. Repeat for a week, at the same hour, and notice whether the worry sits further away.

A woman sits in a hospital corridor while her mother's scan is read. Her mind runs ahead to the worst rooms: the funeral, the empty flat, the money. Her hands are cold. She is not in the corridor at all. The text's teaching would change one thing, step by step. She notices that all this is being watched. The fear is seen, the pictures are seen, the cold hands are seen. Ashtavakra says what sees is one, pure awareness, and that it is not the fear. Held as a certainty and not a hope, the watching gives the fear less to grow in, and she can feel the chair and hear her name when it is called. Ordinary experience agrees that fear grows in the dark of not knowing. The verse does not promise the scan will be clear, and it does not take the grief away if it is not. It is no substitute for the doctor, the treatment or the people who can sit beside her.
