The World Like a Rope
Ashtavakra Gita 1.10
Meaning · English
In which this world appears, imagined, like a snake in a rope: that is bliss, the highest bliss. That awareness is you. Be happy.
Ashtavakra gives Janaka a picture and then a name. The picture is a snake seen in a rope. The word kalpita means imagined, fashioned by the mind (from klrip, to shape). The snake is not made of anything else. Nothing was added to the rope. The mind laid a shape over it. The verse says the world appears in the same way, in something that does not change. That something is bodha, awareness, from budh, to wake. It is the knowing in which anything is seen at all. The text calls it ananda, bliss, and then paramananda, bliss beyond any bliss that comes and goes. Then comes the plain statement: that awareness is you. The text does not call the world nothing. It says the world is imagined in the sense that the snake is: taken for something it is not. Janaka asked how freedom is won. The answer is that nothing is missing, because what he seeks is what he already is. The fear belongs to the snake, and the snake belongs to a bad look in poor light. So the last words are an instruction to Janaka: be happy, since the ground of all appearing is himself.
At dusk a coil lies on the garden path. Your foot stops and your heart jumps. Then a lamp is brought, and it is only rope. The rope was there the whole time. The snake and the fright belonged to the bad light. The rope is awareness, and the snake is the world taken for something that threatens.
1. Today, the next time a small worry makes your chest tighten, stop for ten seconds and name what is actually in front of you, as plainly as you would describe a rope. 2. Notice that the worry came and the knowing of it stayed. Ask which of the two was there before. 3. In the evening, sit for five minutes and recall one thing from today that frightened you. See whether it was the thing itself or the story laid over it.
A man stands on a station platform when his manager's message arrives: "Call me when you can." His stomach drops. By the time the train comes he has lost the job, told his wife, and sold the flat. The verse teaches that every such shape appears in awareness and is taken for more than it is. Step by step: he notices the fear is being seen, so there is a seer who is not afraid. He separates the five words on the screen from the film running over them. He asks what is actually in front of him, which is a request to call. Then he calls. Ordinary experience confirms that a frightened body reads every dim shape as danger, and that a calmer look often shows something smaller. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise the call will bring good news, and it does not remove real loss if the news is bad. It teaches where he stands while he hears it, and it does not replace a doctor or a lawyer where one is needed.
