Bubbles From the Sea

Ashtavakra Gita 5.2

Meaning · English

From you the world arises, as a bubble rises from the sea. Knowing the self to be one, dissolve in just this way.

Two Sanskrit words carry this teaching. Viswa means the world, everything seen and counted: people, places, the body, the mind's passing thoughts. Laya means dissolving or melting back, from the root li, to cling close and merge, as salt goes into water. The verse says the world rises from you the way a bubble rises from the sea. A bubble has a shape and a moment, yet it is only sea, and it is never apart from the sea. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that the world stands to the self in the same way: it appears in the self and has no ground of its own. Then comes the second clause. Knowing the self as one, with nothing second beside it, Janaka is asked to dissolve in just this way. This follows from the first verse, where Ashtavakra says nothing clings to him. If nothing clings, nothing needs to be pulled apart or fought off. It is enough to see the bubble as sea and let the sense of separate things settle back. Janaka has asked how freedom is won. The answer given is that no new thing is won: the world was never other than the self, and seeing this is the dissolving.

Watch a pot of water come to the boil. Bubbles swell from the bottom, each round and bright for a moment, then they break and are plain water again. None of them held anything but the water they rose from. The world is the bubbles; the self is the water.

1. Tonight, fill a clear glass of water and set it in front of you for two minutes. 2. Tap the side lightly, or blow gently through a straw, and watch the bubbles rise and vanish. 3. Then look at one thing that troubles you today, a task or a sharp word, and ask only: what is this made of, if not the same awareness that sees it? 4. Notice, without pushing, whether it feels slightly less solid.

A man stands at the kitchen window at dusk, two days after a quarrel with his brother over their father's house. The argument keeps replaying, each phrase heavy and fixed, as if it were the whole of life. The verse, as the Ashtavakra Gita teaches it, changes the moment in steps. First he sees that the quarrel, the house and the hurt appear in his awareness; they do not sit outside it. Then he sees they come and go while the one who notices them stays. Then the replaying loosens its grip, because it is a bubble and not the sea. Ordinary experience confirms that a thought watched calmly tends to lose some of its force. The verse does not promise the quarrel is settled, the grief is gone, or that he needs no conversation with his brother. It does not replace a doctor if the sleeplessness or low mood continues. It names where he stands while all of it happens.
