Meaning · English
Though it is seen plainly before the eyes, the world has no substance of its own, and so it is not in you, the spotless one. It shows as clearly as a snake on a rope. Dissolve in just this way.
Four words carry it. Pratyaksha means what is seen directly, 'before the eye'. The text grants that the world is perceived, plainly. Avastutva means lacking vastu, a thing that stands on its own. The world is called unreal in that sense: it has no ground of its own, though it is seen. Amala means stainless, without mala, dirt. It names the self Janaka is, which nothing sticks to. Laya, from li, to melt, is the dissolving the closing line asks for. Taken clause by clause: the world is seen, yet it is not in you, the spotless one, because it has no substance. Ashtavakra's example is a rope mistaken for a snake in poor light. The snake is vivid and the fear is real, but there was only rope all along, and the snake never touched it. In the same way the world appears vividly, yet it adds nothing to the self and takes nothing from it. The last line asks that it melt back, as the snake melts the moment the rope is known. This answers Janaka's opening question about how freedom is won. Ashtavakra says nothing has to be won. The trouble is a mistaken seeing. What he asks of the listener is to know the appearance as appearance, and to rest as the one in whom it appears.
A coat hangs on a hook in a dim hallway, and for a second it is a stranger standing there. Your heart jumps. Then the light comes on and it is only a coat. The stranger was never in the hallway. The world, in this teaching, is that stranger, and the self is the one who sees.
1. Tonight, in a dim room, look at an ordinary object, a coat or a towel, until it looks like something else. Then switch on the light. 2. Notice that the fright, or the odd shape, was in the seeing and not in the object. 3. Once tomorrow, when a worry grips you, say quietly, 'this is being seen.' Spend one minute noticing who is aware of it.
A woman walks home late from the bus stop. Under a broken streetlight, a figure seems to crouch by the fence. Her pulse jumps, her steps quicken, her hand goes for her keys. Ten steps closer, it is a sack of laundry someone left on the rail. The text would have her look at what happened after the first glance. The shape was seen, and the fear was real in her body. But what stood there was only cloth, and the figure existed only in the seeing. The text teaches that the whole world stands to the self as that shape stood to her. It appears fully, and it has no ground of its own. The self that watched the figure appear, and watched it go, was untouched by both. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: in bad light and a tired mind, we see threats that are not there. The verse does not promise that she will stop feeling fear or that her pulse will stay calm. It does not say that every dark shape is harmless, and it does not replace care in a lonely street. It speaks of what she is, not of what she should ignore.
