Ashtavakra Gita 5.4

Meaning · English

The same in pain and in pleasure, full and complete, the same in hope and in despair, the same in living and in dying, remain as you are, and dissolve in just this way.

Three words carry this. Sama means even, level, the same on both sides. Purna means full, lacking nothing. Laya means dissolving, the way salt goes into water and is no longer found as salt. Hope and despair are asha and nairashya: leaning toward what has not come, and sagging when it does not. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that the self is the same in pain and pleasure, in hope and despair, in life and death. He does not say these stop arriving. He says they are events, and the self that sees them is neither raised by the good ones nor lowered by the bad. Because it is already full, hope has nothing to bring it and despair has nothing to take. Even life and death are only two more of the pairs. The verse comes here because Janaka asked how freedom is won. Ashtavakra has just said the world is not a second thing standing beside the self. So the pairs that seem to rule a person have no hold on it. What he asks of Janaka is to let the sense of being the one tossed between them melt into that evenness, and to rest as the full one, not the swinging one.

A stone doorstep at the front of a house. Delighted guests step on it, so do mourners, and so does the person carrying news of a birth or a death. It is the same step in the morning and at night. The self, in this teaching, is the step: it carries every arrival and is changed by none.

1. Choose one ordinary small swing today, such as good news, a sharp remark, or a delayed bus. 2. When it lands, stop for the length of three slow breaths and say silently, "This is arriving, and I am watching it arrive." 3. Notice where the lift or the sinking sits in the body, and whether the one noticing is lifted or sunk. 4. In the evening, spend two minutes recalling that moment and how long the swing lasted once watched.

A man sits in a hospital corridor at four in the afternoon, waiting for a biopsy result. He rehearses the good outcome, then the bad one, and each rehearsal tires him more than the waiting itself. Ordinary experience confirms that hope and dread both pull the mind out of the present, and that a tired body gives them more power. Ashtavakra's teaching would work in that corridor step by step. First the man sees that hope and despair are two movements of the same leaning, toward a result not yet here. Then he sees that the one who sees the leaning is not itself leaning. The text teaches that this witness is already full, and stays the same whatever the result says. His breath may slow, his hands may loosen, and the next hour may be spent sitting rather than rehearsing. The verse does not promise the result will be good, and it does not remove fear or grief when they come. It is no substitute for the doctor, the treatment, or the people who can sit beside him.
