The verse and its meaning · Ashtavakra Gita · Ashtavakra Gita — Letting the World Dissolve
Boundless as Sky
Ashtavakra Gita 6.1
Meaning · English
I am boundless as the sky, and the world, being of nature's making, is like a pot. This alone is knowledge. For one who knows it, there is no giving up, no grasping and no dissolving.
Ashtavakra gives Janaka one picture and one conclusion. The picture first. Ananta means without end: an, not, and anta, end. The self has no edge, as the sky has none. A ghata is a pot, a shaped, bounded thing made of clay. Prakrta comes from prakriti, nature, the made and changing stuff of things, and here it means the ordinary, natural world. So the world is like a pot: a shape that appears inside the sky, with sky around it and within it. The text does not call the pot nothing. It says the pot is small and the sky is not. Then the conclusion, repeated in each verse. Tyaga is giving up, from tyaj, to leave. Graha is grasping, from grah, to seize. Laya is dissolving, from li, to melt. One who knows the self as boundless has nothing to leave, because nothing stands outside it. There is nothing to seize, because nothing is lacking. And there is no need to melt the world away, because a pot does not trouble the sky. This answers Janaka's question about how freedom is won. Ashtavakra's reply is that none of these three acts wins it. It is recognised, and the listener is asked only to see what the self is.
A film of a flood plays on a cinema screen. The water rises, boats overturn, and the screen stays dry. It does not push the flood off or hold it on; it only shows it. The self is the screen, the world is the picture on it, and nothing has to be thrown out.
1. Tonight, sit five minutes by a window and look at the sky. Notice how it holds clouds, birds and a plane without effort. 2. Name three things from your day, such as a bill, a quarrel and a plan. Say quietly of each, "a pot in the sky." 3. Once today, catch yourself clutching something or pushing it away. For one breath, do neither, and see what remains.
A man is clearing his late father's shop, shelf by shelf. Each object pulls two ways: keep everything, or bin it all by evening to be done with the pain. Ashtavakra's teaching, as the text gives it, changes the moment in steps. First, the shelves, the ledgers and the smell of the place are seen as shaped things appearing in something larger that is himself, a pot in the sky. Second, with that seen, keeping is no longer a desperate hold and discarding is no longer an escape. Third, each object can be handled as what it is: this one to a cousin, this one to the bin, this one kept because it is dear. Ordinary experience agrees that a tight grip tires the hand, and a loosened one works better. The verse does not take away the grief of losing a father, and it does not make the work shorter. It does not replace rest, food or the company of family on a hard day.
