Ocean and Its Waves
Ashtavakra Gita 6.2
Meaning · English
I am the great ocean, and the world with all its spreading variety is like the waves rising on it. This is knowing. For one who knows it so, there is no giving up, no taking hold, and no dissolving.
Four words carry this. Prapancha is the world's spreading-out: everything that appears, in all its variety. Vichi is a wave. Jnana is knowing, from the root jna, to know. Here it means seeing what is so, not gathering facts. Then the closing refrain names three acts: tyaga, letting go; graha, taking hold; and laya, dissolving, a melting back into the source. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that the self is the ocean and the world is only waves on it. A wave has a shape and a name, and it rises and falls. Yet it is nothing but water. In the same way, the many things of the world are not outside the self and not a second thing beside it. Janaka asked how freedom is won. The answer is that one who sees this has nothing to reject, because a wave is not a foreign substance. There is nothing to grab, because no water lies outside the ocean to be gained. And there is nothing to dissolve, because the waves were never apart from the sea. The teaching asks Janaka only to see the water in every wave.
A bedsheet lifted off a bed shows folds, ridges and a crease like a small mountain range. Nobody thinks the folds are extra things added to the cloth, or tries to throw them away. Smooth them and they are gone, and the cloth is unchanged. The world's shapes are the folds; the self is the cloth.
1. Tonight, pick one thing that bothered you today, such as a sharp word or a delay. 2. Sit for two minutes and ask what it was made of. Notice that it was only your own attention, your own noticing, taking a shape. 3. Name the shape silently as a wave: "a wave of worry," "a wave of irritation." 4. Do not push it away or hold it. Notice what is aware of it, and that this awareness stays the same.
A taxi driver sits in a standstill jam on the morning of his daughter's wedding. His hands grip the wheel. He rehearses what he will say to the relatives, and he checks the clock again and again. Every minute feels like a wall. The teaching offers him a different way to see the moment. The jam, the clock and the dread are waves: real shapes that rise and pass. What he is, the one who sees all this, is the sea they rise on. So he has nothing to fight and nothing to cling to. He can leave the hurry where it is, keep his hands loose, and notice the road, the horn behind him and his own breath. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: a worry that is no longer fed often loosens its grip. The limit is plain. This does not clear the road, make him arrive sooner or take away his fear of being late. It speaks about what he is, not about what the traffic will do.
