Silver on a Shell
Ashtavakra Gita 6.3
Meaning · English
I am like the shell; the imagined world is like the silver seen in it. This is knowing. For one who knows it so, there is no giving up, no taking hold, no dissolving.
Ashtavakra offers a small, ordinary picture. A shell lying in the sun can flash like silver, and a passer-by takes it for a coin. The silver was never there. Only the shell was. He says the self is the shell and the world is the silver. A few words carry the teaching. Kalpana is imagining, from klp, to fashion or arrange: the mind assembles a world and sees it as something apart. Jnana is knowing, which here is simply seeing the shell as shell. The refrain then names three things this knowing does not need. Tyaga is giving up. Graha is taking hold. Laya is dissolving, a melting away. Nobody renounces imagined silver, because nothing was ever owned. Nobody grasps it, because there is nothing to hold. It needs no melting, because it was never solid. The silver is truly seen, and it truly stirs the passer-by, but the seeing rests on nothing except the shell. Janaka had asked how freedom is won. Ashtavakra answers that no act of dropping or gaining wins it. It is the recognition of what was always the case. The knowing is complete as it stands, and no task is added to it.
A coat hangs on the back of a bedroom door, and in the dim light it looks like a person standing there. Switching on the lamp does not remove anyone, because no one was there to remove. The coat was all along a coat. The self is the coat; the stranger is the world imagined over it.
1. Tonight, when a worry or a grievance rises, stop for one minute and name only what is physically there: the words actually spoken, the room, your breath. 2. Then ask what was added on top of those facts: a story, a verdict, a fear of what comes next. 3. Say the added part aloud as 'my picture of it', and leave it unfixed and unargued. 4. Notice whether you are the one doing the picturing. Try this once a day for a week.
A mother lies awake at two in the morning, replaying one remark her sister-in-law made at dinner. By now it has grown into a whole story: what the woman thinks of her, what the family says, what is coming at the next gathering. The words actually spoken were few. Ashtavakra's teaching begins exactly here. It says the story is imagined over something simpler, and that the one who sees the story has not been touched by it. In that moment the verse changes the order of things. First she recalls the sentence as it was said. Then she sees the rest as built afterwards, by her own mind, in the dark. Then she sees that she is the one watching the building, and the watching is not harmed by what is built. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: a tired mind at night enlarges small things. The verse does not promise that the remark was kind, that the quarrel is settled, or that sleep will come. It does not replace speaking to the sister-in-law, or seeing a doctor if the sleeplessness lasts.
