One Self, Everywhere Seen

Meaning · English
I am in all beings, and all beings are in me. This is knowing. For one who knows this, there is no giving up, no taking hold, and no dissolving.
Ashtavakra gives Janaka a knowing in two halves. Aham is "I", the Self, the awareness that says "I am". Sarvabhuta means "all beings", literally all that has become, every creature that has come to be. The Self is in all beings, and all beings are in the Self. So no being stands outside it, and nothing lives apart from it. Then come three words, each naming a way people try to reach freedom. Tyaga is giving up, letting go of the world. Graha is taking hold, grasping at what seems to be missing. Laya is dissolving, the mind merging into stillness. Ashtavakra says that for one who has this knowing, none of the three is needed. The reason is plain. Nothing separate exists to be given up, and nothing outside is left to take hold of. Nothing has to be dissolved either, since only the one Self was ever there. This answers Janaka's question about how freedom is won. Ashtavakra says it is not won by any act. It is recognised. The verse asks the listener to stop treating freedom as a task and to look at who is looking.
A single lamp is lit in a room full of mirrors. Every mirror shows a flame, yet there is one flame, and the glass holds only its reflection. Nobody needs to throw out a mirror or grab a flame. The one Self is the lamp, and the many beings are the mirrors showing it.
1. Choose one ordinary journey today, a walk to the shop or a bus ride, and give it ten minutes. 2. Look at each person you pass, and say silently, "the same awareness looks out of them that looks out of me." 3. Do not try to feel anything. Only notice the moment you forget, and then say it again. 4. At night, recall one face from the day and see whether it still seems wholly apart from you.
A woman sits in a hospital corridor at midnight, waiting for news of a stranger's child whom she drove there after an accident. She feels pulled between running away and gripping the nurse's sleeve for answers. Ashtavakra's teaching, as the Gita gives it, offers a third thing. Giving up and grasping are both set aside. She sees that the frightened awareness in her is the same awareness in the child, the parents and the nurse. Fear loosens its claim as her own private matter, and she can sit and wait. Ordinary experience confirms that shared hardship eases when we feel beside others and not cut off. The text promises no more than this. It does not take the child's injury away, it does not end her fear or grief, and it does not stand in for the doctors, who must do their work.
