In me, the boundless great ocean, the ship of the world is driven this way and that by the wind of its own mind. I am not impatient. In me, the boundless great ocean, the wave of the world rises or sinks as its own nature has it. In me there is no gain and no loss.

Janaka speaks of himself as ananta, boundless: an, not, and anta, end. The self he describes has no edge where it stops and something else begins. The world is a ship on this ocean. It is pushed about by svanta-vata, the wind of its own inner mind, from sva, own, and anta, inner end. So the tossing comes from the ship's own restless thinking, not from the water under it. Then he changes the picture. The world is a wave, and it rises or sets by its own nature. A wave is not forced on an ocean. It is simply what an ocean does. Janaka then makes two denials. Asahishnuta is impatience, literally the inability to bear. He says none touches him. Vriddhi and kshati are growth and loss, and neither reaches him. The picture gives the reason: a wave that rises adds no water to the sea, and a wave that falls takes none away. This is taught here because Ashtavakra had told him the self is the witness, already free. Janaka, having recognised it, reports how it stands from inside. Events go on, but they no longer happen to someone who can be enlarged or reduced by them. The teaching asks the listener to know himself as the water, not as the shape of any one wave.

A railway platform. Trains come in crowded and leave empty, loud ones and late ones, and the platform stays where it is. No arrival makes it larger, no departure makes it smaller. The platform is the self; the trains are everything that comes and goes in a day.

1. Pick one small thing today that is going wrong: a late bus, a slow reply, a queue. 2. For one minute, say quietly to yourself, "This is a wave." Watch it rise without joining it. 3. Notice what in you is doing the watching. It was there before the delay and is still there. 4. In the evening, recall one worry from this morning and see whether it has already sunk.

A retired teacher opens her bank app on a morning when the markets have fallen, and the number beside her savings is smaller than it was yesterday. Her chest tightens. She refreshes the page twice, as if the figure might change under her stare. The verse changes the moment in steps. First she sees the number as a wave: it has risen and fallen before, by its own nature, and her looking does not move it. Second, she sees the tightness in her chest as a smaller wave, with its own rise and its own going down. Third, she notices that something in her is aware of both and is not itself smaller today. Ordinary experience confirms that a surge of worry usually peaks and eases if it is not fed with more checking. Janaka teaches that the self has neither gain nor loss. That does not tell her whether to sell, hold or speak to an adviser, and it does not make the loss of money cost nothing. Practical decisions still need a clear head and, where money is involved, good advice.
