In me, the boundless great ocean, what is called the world is only imagination. I stand in this, utterly still and without form.
King Janaka is speaking of what he has found in himself, and he says it to his teacher Ashtavakra. Three words carry it. Vikalpana is imagining or construction, from kalp, to fashion, so it means the mind shaping things and laying them over what is there. Nirakara means formless: nir, without, and akara, shape. Atishanta means utterly still, past all stirring. Janaka says that the self is endless and without limit, and that the thing named the world is a construction of the mind within it. He does not say the world is nothing. He says the world as we hold it, a heap of separate things we name, judge and grip, is the mind's fashioning. The self has no shape for such things to cling to. So the self is formless, and for that reason it is completely still. Nothing in it can push against anything else. Janaka then says he stands in exactly this. He is not describing a hope or a method. He reports where he rests. Ashtavakra had taught that the self is the witness, already free, and needs only to be recognised. Janaka answers by showing what that recognition looks like from inside: the world no longer weighs on him, because he sees what it is made of. The text asks the listener to look at whatever troubles them and ask whether it is built of imagination laid over a stillness that was never touched.
A film plays on a cinema screen: a storm, a fire, a flood. The cloth is never wet or burned. When the projector goes dark, it hangs there, plain and unharmed. The world is the film made by the mind, and the formless self is the screen under all of it.
1. Tonight, pick one worry that keeps returning. Write it as a plain sentence on paper, then underline each part that is a picture in your head rather than something now happening. 2. Sit for five minutes with the paper beside you. Each time the picture starts, say quietly, 'this is imagining,' and let your breath go out. 3. Notice what remains when the picture drops: the room, the sounds, the one who is aware of them. Rest there a moment before you get up.
A man stands on a railway platform at night. His train is cancelled, and he starts replaying yesterday's quarrel with his brother, adding sharper replies and picturing the phone call tomorrow. His jaw is tight and his shoulders are high, though nothing around him has changed. The verse speaks to this moment. Janaka calls the world, as the mind holds it, imagination. So the man could notice that the quarrel exists on the platform only as pictures and words he is making. The cold, the bench and the announcement are what is actually there. Seeing that, he might let the replay drop and feel his breath loosen. Ordinary experience confirms that rehearsing a conflict in the head can tense the body as if it were happening. The text goes further and speaks of a stillness behind all such constructing, the formless self, and that is its own teaching about who he is. It does not promise the quarrel will heal, the train will come, or grief and illness will vanish. Where a real worry needs a call, a doctor or a decision, that still has to be done.
