The Veil Over Knowing
Bhagavad Gita 5.15
Meaning · English
The omnipresent God accepts no one's sin, and no one's virtuous deeds either. Knowledge is covered by ignorance, and by that covering the living beings are deluded.
Three words carry it. Vibhu means the all-pervading one, present everywhere and so never a party to any single act. Ajnana is ignorance, literally not-knowing. Jnana is knowledge. Krishna tells Arjuna that God does not take up anyone's sin and does not take up anyone's merit. He is not a bookkeeper who enters wrongs in one column and good deeds in another. The reason beings think otherwise is given in the second half: knowledge is already there, but ignorance has covered it, and that covering is what bewilders living creatures. The trouble is a veil, not an absence. This answers a worry raised just before. If nature carries out action, why do people feel so weighed down by what they did and what was done to them? Krishna's answer is that the weight comes from not seeing clearly. Shankara reads the verse as saying the Lord stays untouched, and that the sense of owning sin and merit belongs to ignorance of the Self. Ramanuja stresses that the Lord is impartial, and that beings' own past action and their forgetting of their true nature produce their experience. Madhva emphasises God's complete independence, which no human deed can stain or enlarge. For the listener, the verse asks for a change of question, from who is keeping score to what is covering my sight.
A window caked with dust. A person indoors decides the day is gray and the light is against them. The light was never taking sides. The glass is dirty. The light stands for God who is not swayed by anyone's deeds, and the dust for ignorance covering what is already known.
1. Tonight, take five minutes and write down one thing you are calling a punishment, for yourself or for someone else. 2. Beside it, write only what plainly happened, in facts, with no verdict. 3. This week, each time you catch "I deserved this" or "they deserve that," stop for one slow breath before you speak or act. 4. Notice whether the situation looks any different once the verdict is set down.
A woman stands in a hospital corridor while her father is in the ward. An aunt, meaning to comfort her, says this must be payment for something the family once did. The sentence lands like a verdict, and she starts searching her past for the crime. Krishna tells Arjuna that God accepts no one's sin and no one's merit, and that confusion comes from knowledge being covered. Step by step, then: she can hear the aunt's sentence as a veil, not a ruling. She can turn from the question of what she did wrong to the questions the doctor can answer, such as what is happening, what can be done, and what her father needs tonight. A family doctor would say much the same about illness, that it has causes in the body, in age and in chance, and is not a moral score. Ordinary experience also shows that frightened people grab for a cause, and a blaming cause can feel better than none. The verse does not cure her father, remove her fear, or replace the doctor's care.
