Sunrise on the Self
Bhagavad Gita 5.16
Meaning · English
But for those whose ignorance of the self has been destroyed by knowledge, that knowledge lights up the Supreme, the way the sun lights up everything it rises over.
Two words carry the teaching. Jnana is knowledge, a direct seeing and more than information. Ajnana is its opposite: not knowing, a blindness about what the self really is. Krishna tells Arjuna that where this knowledge has destroyed the ignorance, it does something specific. It lights up the Supreme, the way the sun lights up a landscape. The sun does not argue with the dark or push it out. It rises, and things become visible. The reason follows from the verse before. Krishna has said that ignorance covers knowledge, and that this cover is why living beings are bewildered. If the trouble is a covering, the remedy is not more effort at the surface. The remedy is the knowledge that removes the covering. Nothing new is added to the person. What was hidden is shown. What Krishna asks of the listener is to take knowledge seriously as the thing that frees, and not to expect rituals or restlessness to do it. The commentators read the verse differently. Shankara takes the knowledge to be the self's oneness with Brahman, which ends ignorance at its root. Ramanuja takes it as knowledge of the self as belonging to the Lord, ripened in devotion. Madhva stresses that the Lord is revealed through his grace to the one who knows.
A bedroom at dawn, curtains drawn, shapes unclear, a chair that looks like a person. Nobody sweeps the dark out. The curtain opens, the sun comes in, and each thing is simply seen as it is. Ignorance is that dimness, and knowledge is the light that reveals the self without a fight.
1. Tonight, for five minutes, pick one worry that has been circling today. 2. On paper, write two columns: what I actually know, and what I have assumed. 3. Look at the assumed column. Notice whether the worry lives mostly there. 4. Tomorrow, find out one fact from the assumed column by asking someone or checking directly. Notice what happens to the worry once the fact arrives.
A woman has not spoken to her brother in six years. She is certain he ignored her letter when their mother died. Then a cousin mentions, in passing, that the letter went to an old address and he never saw it. Nothing in her was fought or argued down. She simply sees differently, and the six years of anger loses its footing within minutes. That is the movement the verse describes. First, the covering was never the brother's coldness. It was a belief she took for a fact. Second, what ended it was seeing, and effort of will had not done it. Third, once the fact was clear, her next step, a phone call, became obvious without much deliberating. Ordinary experience bears this out: a fear built on a guess often drops the moment the guess is checked. The limit is plain. Krishna speaks of knowledge of the self and the Supreme, which is far larger than a corrected misunderstanding. And the sight of a fact does not return the six years, nor does it remove the grief of the loss that began it.
