Mind Set on God
Bhagavad Gita 5.17
Meaning · English
Their intellect set on God, their heart absorbed in God, their faith firm in God, with God as their highest goal and refuge, they go to a place of no return, their sins shaken off by knowledge.
Krishna lists four ways a person can be turned toward God, and each word names a different part of the person. Buddhi is the intellect, the part that weighs and decides, so the first group are those whose decisions point toward God. Atman here means the heart, mind and intellect together, so the second group are wholly absorbed. Nishtha is standing firm, so the third group have a faith that holds when things get hard. Parayana is the goal that is also the refuge, the place you aim for and run to, so God is both destination and shelter for the fourth. Together they describe a whole person facing one way. Such people go where there is no coming back. Apunar-avritti means not turning round again, which the commentators read as freedom from return to birth and death. The reason is in the last clause. Kalmasha is stain, the grime of wrong done and wrong thought, and nirdhuta means shaken off, as dust is shaken from cloth. Knowledge does the shaking. Shankara reads the knowledge as knowing the self to be one with Brahman. Ramanuja reads it as steady, loving meditation on the Lord. Madhva reads it as knowing God as wholly distinct and supreme, reached by his grace. All three agree that the stain goes when ignorance goes.
A rug hangs on a washing line and a man beats it with a flat stick. Dust leaves it in grey clouds, and the rug itself is not damaged. The dust is the sin that clings to a person, the beating is knowledge, and what remains is what was always underneath.
1. Tonight, spend five minutes writing one plain sentence about what you hold as your highest aim. Keep it short enough to remember. 2. Tomorrow morning, say that sentence once before your first task, quietly, and then begin the task. 3. At midday, stop for one minute. Notice where your mind has been most of the morning, and whether it was near or far from that sentence. 4. If it had wandered, turn it back without scolding yourself, and do the same again in the evening.
A retired bus driver wakes at five in the morning in his small flat. He is replaying a quarrel with his brother from thirty years ago, and every line he spoke comes back in the dark. Krishna's words change what he does with the hour, step by step. First, the stain is treated as something knowledge removes, not something self-punishment removes, so going over the quarrel again and again is not the cure. Second, the verse asks for a single direction: intellect, heart, faith and refuge all turned the same way, so the mind that circles has somewhere to go. He can name what he holds highest, and let that decide his next small act, such as writing a letter or getting up to wash and pray. Ordinary experience agrees that a mind with one direction circles less than a mind with none. The verse does not undo the quarrel, return the lost years or bring his brother to the door. It also does not replace a doctor, and if sleeplessness or heavy low mood lasts for weeks, he needs to see one.
