Equal Vision
Bhagavad Gita 5.18
Meaning · English
The learned see with equal vision a Brahmin equipped with knowledge and humility, a cow, an elephant, a dog, and a dog-eater.
Krishna names the wise by one mark: they are paṇḍitāḥ, the learned, and their sign is sama-darśhinaḥ, equal sight. Sama means same, level. Darśhin means one who sees. The word is not about liking everyone the same or treating everyone the same. It is about what the eye rests on. Vidyā is knowledge, and vinaya is humbleness, a trained gentleness. Krishna begins with a Brahmin who has both, the most honoured person of his day. Then he drops down the ladder: a cow, an elephant, a dog, and a dog-eater, a person shunned at the very edge of society. The list runs from revered to despised, human and animal, to cover everyone. The reason sits in the verses before it: those whose ignorance is destroyed and whose mind is set on God no longer see only the outer form. Krishna says the learned see past rank, species and birth to the same Self in each. Shankara reads the equal sight as seeing one Brahman everywhere. Ramanuja reads it as seeing every self as alike in nature, each belonging to God. Madhva keeps the differences real and takes the equal sight to mean seeing all as dependent on God alike. The verse asks the listener to measure learning by how the eye behaves, not by how much is known.
A potter's wheel holds a lamp, a bowl, a cup and a brick, all fired from the same clay. The shapes differ and the uses differ, and the potter handles each with the care it needs. The wise see the clay in every shape, and still know a cup from a brick.
1. Today, pick one person you usually look past, such as a cleaner, a delivery rider, or a stray animal near your door. 2. Spend one minute with them: greet them, ask their name, or simply watch them with full attention. 3. Notice the first judgment your mind makes about them, and name it silently without arguing with it. 4. In the evening, recall their face and ask whether anything in them was missing from the person you most respect.
A hospital porter wheels a patient to the ward at midnight. The consultant had walked past him all week without a glance. Tonight he is tired and the porter says nothing, and the porter notices his own habit of making himself small. Now picture the verse entering that moment. The consultant sees the porter's face and learns his name. He thanks him the way he would thank a colleague. He speaks to the patient and the porter in the same tone. His rank does not change, and neither does the porter's job. What changes is the quality of his attention. Ordinary experience confirms that people notice quickly when they are being seen as a role instead of a person, and that being seen changes how they answer. Krishna's teaching goes further, since it says the same Self lives in each, and that is the text's claim, not a social habit. The limit is plain: equal vision does not erase real differences of duty or skill, does not make the consultant's work easier, and does not fix the porter's low pay or the hierarchy of the ward.
