Winning Before Death
Bhagavad Gita 5.19
Meaning · English
Even here, in this very life, creation is conquered by those whose minds rest in equanimity. Brahman is flawless and the same in all, and so they are seated in Brahman.
Three words carry this. Sargah means the creation, the whole turning world of gains and losses, likes and dislikes. Samya means equanimity, a mind level and unmoved, the same in every condition. Nirdosham means flawless, without fault or stain. Krishna tells Arjuna that those whose minds stand in samya have already conquered sargah, and they have done it iha eva, in this very life, not after death. The reason he gives is that Brahman is flawless and equal in everything. A mind that is level shares that nature, so such people are seated in Brahman. This answers a worry the earlier verses raise: if freedom comes through knowledge, when does it arrive? Krishna says it can be had now, in how the mind stands. The conquest is not over the world but over its pull. What he asks of Arjuna is steadiness, a mind that does not tilt toward the pleasant or away from the unpleasant. Shankara reads the conquest as freedom from rebirth, won here by knowledge. Ramanuja reads the equal mind as seeing every self as alike in its nature. Madhva stresses that this seat in Brahman comes through devotion and grace, not effort alone.
A boat tied loosely at a dock rises and falls with every passing wave and rubs against the wood. A boat in a still lake lies level whatever the day brings. Sargah is the water that never stops moving, and the level boat is the equal mind, which the movement can no longer rule.
1. Pick one ordinary irritation today, such as a delayed bus, a curt message or cold tea. 2. When it arrives, stop for three slow breaths before answering or reacting. 3. Notice whether the mind is tilting toward or away from the thing. Name it silently as a pull or a push. 4. In the evening, spend two minutes recalling one moment when you stayed level, however small, and what made it possible.
A bus conductor on a crowded evening route is shouted at by a passenger over change he does not have. His jaw tightens and his reply is already forming. Krishna's teaching would change the moment in steps. First he sees the tightening as a pull, not as a fact about the passenger. Second, he lets the breath settle before he speaks. Third, he answers the actual complaint, not the sting. The shout is the same, but it no longer decides his mood for the next hour. Ordinary experience confirms that a calmer body gives a calmer reply, and that tiredness and hunger make reaction quicker. The text's own claim goes further: that a mind kept level in this way is already seated in Brahman, and that is its teaching, offered as such. The limit is plain. Equanimity does not remove the passenger's anger, the conductor's fatigue or a real injustice, and it does not replace rest, a doctor's care or a proper complaint where one is due.
