Steady in Gain and Loss
Bhagavad Gita 5.20
Meaning · English
One whose intellect is steady and free of confusion, who knows God and rests in God, neither rejoices on obtaining what is pleasant nor is disturbed on meeting what is unpleasant.
Krishna describes a person by how they take news. Three words carry it. Sthira-buddhi is a steady intellect: buddhi is the faculty that judges and decides, and sthira means it does not wobble. Asammudha means not bewildered; the person sees clearly and does not mistake a passing event for the whole of life. Brahma-vit is one who knows brahman, the divine reality, and that knowing is firm rather than borrowed. The last clause says such a person is established in God. The picture is of someone with two ordinary moments, getting what they like and getting what they dislike, and neither one carries them off. Krishna gives the reason in the lines around it: pleasures that come from contact with the world begin and end, so a mind that is fastened to them rises and falls with them. Resting in what does not begin or end is what keeps the intellect level. He asks Arjuna to take his footing there. Shankara reads the knower as one who has realised the self as one with brahman, so gain and loss find nothing to cling to. Ramanuja reads the steadiness as coming from knowing the self as distinct from the body, which is what receives pleasure and pain. Madhva stresses knowledge of God as supreme, with the person resting in devotion to him.
A boat tied to a pier rises and drops with every wave, and a passing ferry sets the whole harbour rocking. The pier does not move. The steady intellect is the pier: pleasant and unpleasant news are the waves, and what the person rests in is the fixed ground beneath.
1. Tonight, recall one piece of good news and one piece of bad news from this week. 2. For each, ask how long its effect on your mood actually lasted, in hours or days. 3. Tomorrow, when something pleasant or irritating arrives, pause for three slow breaths before you answer or act. 4. Notice what in you stays the same while the feeling rises, and sit with that for one minute.
Meera stands at her gate holding two letters. One says her son has won a school scholarship. The other says the rent on her tailoring shop is going up next month. Her heart lifts and sinks within the same minute. Krishna's teaching would change what happens next, step by step. She would let the joy be joy without rushing to tell everyone and spend money she does not yet have. She would read the rent notice once, slowly, without letting the scholarship soften it or letting the notice spoil the scholarship. Then she would sit down and work out what each letter really asks of her. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: a racing heart and a fast-moving mind make poor decisions, and a calmer moment makes better ones. The text's deeper claim, that the steadiness comes from being established in God, is its own teaching about where the footing lies. The verse does not promise that the rent will stay low, that Meera will feel nothing at the notice, or that worry will not come. It describes a steadiness that grows with practice, and it does not replace advice from a doctor or counsellor where one is needed.
