Meaning · English

Some few good people worship you as the red one, the colour of dawn, a sun-bud opening the lotus-forest of great poets' minds. Through speech deep with the rising wave of young love, which Brahma's beloved Sarasvati knows, they delight the learned.

Three words carry the verse. Aruna means reddish, the colour of early dawn. Bala-atapa means young sunlight, the soft first warmth of morning. Shringara is love in the poetic sense, the mood of romance, and the verse calls it a wave, lahari, the same word that gives the hymn its name. The poet says a few good people, and only a few, worship the Goddess as the red one. For them she is dawn light falling on the lotus-forest of the minds of great poets. A lotus opens when the sun reaches it, and a mind opens when she reaches it. The verse then says what these worshippers do. Their words become deep, and in them young love rises like a wave, the kind of love Brahma's consort Sarasvati herself is said to know. With such speech they please the discerning, the people who truly judge poetry. The question behind it is why some devotees speak so well. The hymn answers that the speech comes from her light on the mind, not from skill alone. Lakshmidhara reads the red colour as her particular form to be meditated on. The commentators also hold that the verse holds a mantra by tradition, and nothing more is said of it here.

Think of a pond before sunrise, lotus buds shut and grey. When the first low sun touches the water, the petals loosen one by one and turn pink. The pond is the poet's mind, the sunlight is the Goddess, and the opening is the speech that follows.
