Whoever holds you in mind, mother, together with Vashini and the other speech goddesses, gleaming like split moonstone, becomes a maker of poems, his words curving like the great poets', sweet with the scent of Sarasvati's lotus face.

The text teaches that the Goddess does not stand alone. Speech itself has attendants around her, and the poet asks the reader to picture her with them. Three words carry the picture. Vac is speech, the power that turns thought into sound. Vashini is the first of the speech goddesses, her name coming from vash, to bring under control, so she is speech under command. Bhangi is a turn or bend, and also a wave. Here it names the winding, surprising turn of phrase that marks a great poet. Taken clause by clause: the poet addresses her as mother. He speaks of one who holds her in mind together with Vashini and the others. These goddesses shine like a slab of moonstone when it is broken, cool and white with light inside. The text then says such a person becomes a maker of kavya, poetry. His words have the turns of the great poets. They are sweet, as if scented by the lotus that is the face of Vagdevi, the goddess of speech, Sarasvati. Why it is taught here: the neighbouring verses ask where beautiful speech comes from. The answer given is that it is her gift, carried by her attendants, and not a skill a person owns. The verse asks the listener to see speech as part of her beauty, and to hold her and her speech goddesses in one picture.

A clear glass bowl with a lamp inside, set on a table. One flame throws many small bright flecks across the wall, each a different shape, none separate from the flame. The Goddess is the flame, and the speech goddesses are those flecks of light: one source, many shining forms of speech.
