The verse and its meaning · Yoga Sutras · Where Minds Come From
Becoming Another Kind
Yoga Sutras 4.2
Meaning · English
A change into another kind of birth comes about through the filling-in of nature's own creative stuff, which pours into the new form and completes it.
Take the words one at a time. Jati is birth, and by extension a kind or class of being. Antara is other. Parinama is a change in which something becomes different while remaining the same underlying stuff. Prakriti is nature, the original creative material from which bodies and minds are made. Apura is a filling up, an overflowing, like a vessel being filled to the brim. Put together, the sutra says that a shift into another kind of being happens because nature's own material flows in and fills the new form. Nothing is brought from outside nature. Patanjali says this because the sutra before it lists ways powers appear, including birth, and a question follows: how can a being cross into a different kind at all? His answer is that the change belongs to nature's own flowing. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, reads it this way: when a being moves into a new body or class, the constituents of prakriti pour into the new form and shape it. The commentators broadly follow him. The sutra gives the source of the change here. The question of what sets it going is left to the next sutra.
Bread dough rises in a tin and fills every corner. Put the same dough in a round pan and it fills that shape instead. The dough is one material, and the pan decides the form. In the sutra, nature's one creative stuff fills whichever new form is ready for it.
1. At a meal today, pick one food and trace it back: a plant, soil, water, sunlight. Take a minute to do this. 2. Look at your own hand for a moment. Notice that its material was once food, and before that earth. 3. In the evening, recall one thing about yourself that has changed over the years, such as a skill, a taste or a habit. Notice that you cannot point to the day it was added from outside.
