Neither Bright Nor Dark

Yoga Sutras 4.7

Meaning · English

The action of a yogi is neither white nor black. For everyone else, action comes in three kinds.

Three terms carry the sutra. Karma is action, anything done by body, speech or thought. Shukla is white, bright, the kind of action that yields pleasant fruit. Krishna is black, the kind that yields painful fruit. The prefix a- means not, so the yogi's action is ashukla and akrishna: neither white nor black. Trividha means threefold. Patanjali says everyone else acts in three ways: white, black, or a mixture of the two. The point is that ordinary action leaves something behind. Each deed ripens into pleasure, pain, or a blend, and that result shapes the next mind that acts. The yogi's action does not feed this cycle in the same way. Patanjali has just said, in the sutra before this one, that what comes from contemplation carries no seed of future sorrow. This sutra says the same of action. Vyasa's Bhashya, the oldest commentary, reads it as a fourfold sorting: black action, mixed action, white action done within the mind alone, and the action of those who have let go of everything, which is neither white nor black. The later commentators follow him in the main.

A raw grain pressed into damp soil sends up a shoot. A grain that has been roasted can be pressed into the same soil, and nothing comes up. Both were planted by a hand. Ordinary action is the raw grain, which ripens into something. The yogi's action is the roasted one.

1. Tonight, before sleep, take two minutes and recall three things you did today. 2. For each, notice what it left behind: a pleasant glow, a sting, or a mixture of both. 3. Then find one small act, such as holding a door or washing a cup, that you did with no wish for thanks or result. Notice whether it left anything behind at all. 4. Repeat for a week, and only watch. Do not grade yourself.
