Meaning · English
He who makes your face a point, two breasts below it, and below them half of Hara, and meditates on you, Hara's queen, as Love's own art, quickly stirs women and sways the three worlds, even sun and moon as breasts.
The verse draws a figure in three steps. The face is a bindu, a point or dot. Two breasts lie below it. Below them is harardha, half of Hara, which is Shiva, the one who carries away. Point above and two below make a triangle. The hymn names it manmatha-kala. Manmatha is Love, the mover who churns the mind. Kala is an art, a fraction, a phase. So she is Love's own art, and she is Hara's consort. The old tradition holds that this verse hides the Kama-kala, a secret form handed down by teachers. It does not describe a rite, and this reading gives none. Lakshmidhara reads the verse as pointing to that hidden form. The second half says what the hymn claims for such meditation. It quickly stirs women, and it sways the three worlds, even the world whose breasts are the sun and moon. The sun and moon are her own cosmic body, so the whole sky is hers. Her place beside Shiva is the point. In this hymn he can act only when joined with her. What she moves is the whole of creation.
A child joins three dots on a page with a pencil. At first they are scattered marks, then a triangle stands out that was there all along. The face, the pair below and the Shiva half are those dots, and the hymn says her form appears when they are joined.
