Holding Against the Surge

Bhagavad Gita 5.23

Meaning · English

One who, here in this very body and before it is given up, is able to withstand the force that rises from desire and anger is a yogi, and that person is truly happy.

Three words carry it. Kama is desire, the pull toward what is not in hand. Krodha is anger, the push against what blocks that pull. Vega is a rush or surge, a force that arrives with its own speed. Krishna tells Arjuna that desire and anger are not steady moods but waves, and that the test is whether a person can bear the wave without being carried off. The word for the person who can is yukta, joined or steadied, which is what a yogi is. Krishna gives a reason. The two verses before this one say that pleasure from outside contact begins and ends, and desire is the reaching for it, anger the reaction when it is denied. Whoever is mastered by that cycle has no rest. So he names the task as something for this life: iha eva, in this very body, and before the body is given up. It is not put off to some later birth or old age. He calls such a person sukhi, happy, because the surge no longer decides what they do. Shankara reads the phrase about the body as meaning the effort must hold until death, so mastery is never postponed. Ramanuja reads this steadiness as part of the discipline by which the self is seen as distinct from the body. Madhva, who places devotion at the center, reads it as resting on that devotion rather than willpower alone.

A post driven deep into the bed of a stream stands through the monsoon flood. The brown water rises, shoves, piles debris against it, and still the post stays put. Desire and anger are the flood. The person who can bear them without being swept along is the post, and the steadiness is what Krishna calls happiness.

1. Today, the first time you feel irritation or a sharp want, stop for the length of three slow breaths before speaking or reaching. 2. During those breaths, notice where it sits in the body: jaw, chest, hands. Say to yourself, "a wave is passing." 3. Afterward, choose your words or action. Note whether the force had weakened by then. 4. Tonight, write one line on what rose and how long it lasted.

A woman stands at a government counter on her third visit. The clerk says a stamp is missing and points to the back of the line. Heat climbs her neck, her jaw sets, and a sharp sentence is already formed. The verse would change this in small steps. First she notices the surge as a bodily event: racing heart, tight jaw, shallow breath. Second, she lets it rise without obeying it, and ordinary experience confirms that such a wave crests and eases when it is not fed. Third, she picks what to say once the rush has thinned: ask which office issues the stamp, and where. The wanting for the form to be done and the anger at the delay are still there, but they no longer drive. Krishna calls the person who can do this steady and happy. The verse does not promise the clerk will be kind, the delay will be fair, or grief and injustice will stop hurting. Anger that is frequent, frightening to others or hard to stop is a matter for a doctor or counselor, not only for practice.
