Reaching Liberation

Bhagavad Gita 5.24

Meaning · English

The yogi who is happy within the self, who delights within the self, and who is illumined by the inner light, becomes united with the Lord and attains liberation from material existence.

Three phrases describe the person Krishna points to: happy inside, delighting inside, lit from inside. Each rests on antar, 'inner'. Sukha is ease, a settled well-being. Arama is a garden, a place where people walk and rest for pleasure, so the text says this person takes recreation in the self the way others take it in a park. Jyotih is light: the person sees by an inner lamp, not by what the world hands over. The word eva, 'certainly', presses the point that only this person is meant. Such a person is the yogi, one who is yoked, joined. Krishna says this yogi, having become brahma-bhuta, reaches brahma-nirvana. Nirvana means 'blown out', like a flame; here it is the going out of bondage to material existence. Why say it? The verses just before it say that pleasures born of sense contact begin and end, and bring misery. Krishna answers that problem by naming a source of happiness that does not depend on contact. Shankara reads the goal as the self's identity with impersonal Brahman. Ramanuja reads it as the self reaching its own pure nature in the Lord's presence. Madhva reads it as reaching the Lord while remaining distinct from him.

A household with its own well in the courtyard does not depend on the water seller's cart. If the cart is late or the road floods, the pot still fills. The yogi is that household: ease, rest and light are drawn from a source inside the house, not carried in from outside each day.

1. Today, pick ten minutes, in a chair or on a step, with no phone, book or music. 2. Notice each time your hand or mind reaches for something to fill the time. Name it quietly, such as 'snack' or 'news', and let it pass. 3. Near the end, notice whether any ease is left when the reaching slows, even a small amount. 4. Repeat tomorrow at the same hour, and compare.

A man is on a long bus ride when his phone dies. His hand keeps going to his pocket. The window shows fields he does not look at, and he feels a low irritation, as if something is owed him. Krishna's teaching reads this moment step by step. First, the reaching is seen as reaching: a pull toward something outside that supplies ease. Second, the man stays with the plain bus, the engine hum and his own breathing, and lets the pull rise and fall without obeying it. Third, he checks whether some rest is present that needed no supply. The text says the yogi finds ease, delight and light there as a settled home. Ordinary experience confirms only the small part of this: restlessness often eases when it is not fed. The verse does not promise that the man's worries vanish by the next stop, nor that grief or loss become light. It does not replace a doctor when restlessness is really anxiety or low mood that will not lift. It names a direction, and the text's own claim is that liberation lies at the end of it.
