Liberation Through Goodwill

Bhagavad Gita 5.25

Meaning · English

Holy persons whose sins have been purged, whose doubts are cut away, whose minds are disciplined, and who delight in the welfare of all living beings, reach liberation from material existence.

Krishna gives Arjuna four marks of those who reach liberation, and each has a root. Kalmasha means a stain, something that clings and dirties. Kshina means worn away, so the stains are rubbed off over time, not hidden. Dvaidha means twoness, being of two minds, and chhinna means cut, so the sages are those whose pulling in two directions has been severed. Yata-atma means a self held in rein: the mind is disciplined, and Krishna does not describe it as crushed. Then comes the fourth mark. These people take delight in the welfare of all beings. Hite rata means rejoicing in good done for others. The goal is brahma-nirvana. Nirvana means blown out, as a flame is, and here what goes out is the burning of bondage to material existence. Krishna's reason is that a stained, divided, unruled mind cannot rest, and a mind at rest has no quarrel with anyone's good. So the inner work and the care for others belong together, and the text does not ask Arjuna to choose between them. Shankara reads the sages as those whose knowledge of the Self has ended all separateness. Ramanuja reads the liberation as the self seeing its own pure nature, reached through purified action. Madhva reads it as reaching the Lord, with the sage's goodwill as part of devotion.

A window that has been scrubbed clean no longer keeps the lamp's light inside the room. The glass has not changed the lamp; it has only stopped blocking it. The purged and settled mind is the clear glass, and goodwill toward all beings is the light reaching the street.

1. Tonight, take five minutes and write down one thing you keep going back and forth on. Put the two sides in two short columns. 2. Next to each side, write who it would help or harm besides you. Notice whether the tug weakens when others are in view. 3. Tomorrow, do one small, ordinary good for someone with nothing asked in return, such as carrying a bag or making a call. Afterward, notice whether your mind feels quieter or more restless.

A retired schoolteacher wakes on Sunday knowing a neighbour buried his wife on Friday. One half of her mind says go and sit with him. The other says she will say the wrong thing, and that she has her own tired knees and a quiet morning planned. She stays in bed an hour, turning it over. The verse describes a different morning. The doubt is cut, so she is no longer arguing both sides. The mind is under rein, so fear of awkwardness does not decide for her. Delight in another's welfare points her toward the door, and she walks next door with tea and says little. Ordinary experience agrees that a divided mind is tiring, and that acting for someone else often ends the dithering faster than more thought does. The limit is plain: the verse does not take away his grief or hers, and it does not tell her what to say. It is not a substitute for a doctor or counsellor if his sorrow turns heavy and does not lift.
