Meaning · English

Thin as a streak of lightning, made of sun, moon and fire, your ray sits above the six lotuses. In the great lotus forest, the great ones, minds rubbed clean of stain, behold it and hold a wave of the highest joy.

Three words carry the verse. Kala means a part, a sliver or a ray, and it is also the word for a phase of the moon. Here it is the Goddess's own fine, small presence. Mala means dirt or stain, and the poet uses it for what clouds the mind. Ahlada means delight, and lahari means wave. Together they give the wave of delight that gives the whole hymn its name. Now the clauses. First the picture: her power is as thin as a lightning flash, a single bright line. Yet the poet says it is made of sun, moon and fire, the three great lights, so something very fine holds all the light there is. It rests above the six lotuses, the six centres named earlier in the hymn, so it is the point they climb toward. Then the seers: the poet says that the great ones see it in the great lotus forest, which the commentators take as the thousand-petalled lotus at the crown. They see it only because their minds have been rubbed free of stain. What they hold then is a wave of the highest joy. The hymn teaches this to say where the inner ascent ends and what clears the way. The goal is her, and the stain on the mind is what hides her. The verse asks the listener to see how small and how bright she is said to be, and to take purity of mind as the condition of seeing her.

A window gone grey with dust hides the garden behind it. One wipe with a damp cloth leaves a clear stripe, and the morning light comes straight through. The window is the mind, the dust is the stain the verse names, and the clear stripe is the sight of her ray.
