Meaning · English
"Bhavani, you — look mercifully on me, your servant." He who longs to say this, and has said only "Bhavani, you", is at that moment granted by you the state of oneness with you, your feet lit by the crowns of Mukunda, Brahma and Indra.
The poet imagines a devotee who wants to ask for her mercy: "Bhavani, look kindly on me, your servant." He gets as far as "Bhavani, you" and stops. The text teaches that she answers right then, before the sentence is finished, by giving him sayujya. That word comes from sa, together, and yuj, to join: the state of being yoked to her, one with her. Three words carry the picture. Bhavani is her name, the consort of Bhava, a name of Shiva. The form bhavani can also be read as "let me become". Commentators have noticed that the half-spoken phrase can therefore be heard as "let me become you", so the devotee asks for union without meaning to. Karuna is mercy, and the plea in the verse is for a merciful glance. Nirajita names the lamp waved before a deity in worship. The crowns of Mukunda (Vishnu), Brahma and Indra shine so brightly that they seem like lamps waved at her feet. The great gods bow to the one whose name the small devotee has just begun to say. This is taught here because the verses around it show how vast she is. The question behind it is how a small person can approach her. The poet's answer is that she gives more than she is asked for. The verse asks for nothing from the listener except a name said with longing.
A child at a doorway starts, "Mother, may I..." and before the sentence ends the mother has opened her arms and pulled the child in. The child asked for a small favour. The mother's welcome is far larger than the request, and it comes at the first word.
