Meaning · English

Ah, I am consciousness alone. The world is like a magician's trick. So how, and where, can there be any idea of rejecting or accepting?

Three words carry the verse. Cinmatra is cit, consciousness, with matra, only: nothing but awareness. Indrajala is Indra's net, the old word for a conjurer's illusion, a show that appears vividly and has no substance of its own. Heya and upadeya are what is to be abandoned and what is to be taken up. Kalpana is forming an idea in the mind. Janaka says three things. He is consciousness and nothing else. The world, for him, is like a conjurer's show. So he asks where the sorting could happen. Every act of choosing needs a real thing out there that is good to gain or bad to avoid. If the world is a show appearing in the consciousness he is, the sorting has no ground. The text does not call the world nonexistent. It calls it a show with no separate substance. This answers the question Janaka first put to Ashtavakra: how is freedom won? Here he reports it as already settled. The restless work of pulling things in and pushing things away was an idea held by the mind. Ashtavakra's teaching asks the listener to see that this work has nothing left to do.

Think of a fire in a film. It blazes across the whole screen, and the screen is never scorched. A flood crosses it and the screen stays dry. Consciousness is the screen, and the world is the picture moving over it, so there is nothing on it to grab or flee.

1. Choose one ordinary hour today, perhaps a meal or a walk home. 2. Each time you notice a small pull toward something or push away from something, silently say, "a picture is moving." 3. Do not change what you do. Eat, answer, walk as usual. 4. That evening, remember one pull that loosened a little when you named it.

A young man is packing a suitcase the night before he leaves for a hostel in another city. He lifts each thing and decides: take it, leave it, take it, leave it. By midnight he is tired, and every choice feels heavy and a little anxious. The verse would change that moment in steps. First he sees that the keeping and discarding are ideas his mind is adding, and the cloth, the book and the photograph are only there. Second, the weight of each choice lightens, because the choice carries less than he had given it. Third, he can still pack. He simply packs without the clutch. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: when we are tired, our likes and dislikes grow sharper and louder. The verse does not promise that leaving home will stop hurting, or that grief, illness or loss will lose their sting. It is also no replacement for a doctor when the body needs one. It is Janaka's report of how things look from where he stands, said as the text's own teaching.
