Meaning · English
Bondage is when the mind wants something, grieves over something, lets go of something, takes hold of something, rejoices in something, rages at something. Freedom is when the mind does not want and does not grieve, does not let go and does not take hold, does not rejoice and does not rage.
Three words carry the teaching. Citta is the mind, from a root meaning to perceive: the part of us that gathers impressions and reacts to them. Bandha is bondage, from a root meaning to tie. Mukti is freedom, from a root meaning to loose. The word for letting go in the verse comes from that same root, so even letting go is named as one of the ties. Ashtavakra lists six movements of the mind: wanting, grieving, letting go, grasping, rejoicing, raging. Each is a pull toward something or a push away from it. Bondage is the mind working in these ways, and nothing outside it. Freedom is the same list with every line negated. Janaka had asked how freedom is won. Ashtavakra answers that no place is reached and no object gained. The difference is in what the mind is doing. This matches his wider teaching that the self is the witness and already free, so the only knot is the mind's own clutching. Ashtavakra asks the listener to see that the chains are these six movements and that no jailer stands behind them.
A dog on a leash lunges at every smell, every cat, every dropped crust, and the leash snaps taut each time. The leash is the wanting, grieving and flaring of the mind, and the dog's walk is jerked about by it. Remove the pull, and the same street is simply walked.
1. Choose one ordinary hour today, such as a walk or a meal, and watch for the small pulls of wanting, flinching and irritation. 2. When one rises, say its name silently: wanting, grieving, rejoicing or raging. 3. Do not argue with it or act on it for one full breath. Just see it. 4. That evening, recall one pull you saw. Notice that it came and went while you watched.
A man stands on a railway platform at night. His train has been cancelled, the next one is not for three hours, and his jaw is tight. He wants the train, grieves the lost evening, and rages at the board. Ashtavakra's list gives him names for what is happening. First he sees that wanting, grief and anger are three separate movements, not one fog. Then he sees that each is a pull, and that the cancelled train is only a fact. His shoulders may drop a little, and he can ask the station staff a calm question or find a bench and a cup of tea. Ordinary experience agrees that anger narrows the mind and that a mind not clenched thinks more clearly. The verse does not cancel the delay or promise that the next disappointment will feel light. It does not replace rest, food or a doctor when a body needs them. It describes freedom as a mind that is not pulled, and it does not say the platform becomes pleasant.
