Meaning · English
Mind is bound when it clings to any view at all. Mind is released when it clings to none. Where there is no 'I', there is release. Where there is 'I', there is binding. Knowing this, easily, without effort, take up nothing and let go of nothing.
Three words carry it. Bandha is binding, from bandh, to tie. Moksha is release, from muc, to let loose. Drishti is a view, from drish, to see: a standpoint, a settled way of looking. Ahamkara, the 'I', is the sense of a someone behind the looking. Ashtavakra says the mind is tied when it grips a view, whichever one. It is untied when it grips none. He then names the root: where the 'I' stands, there is binding, and where it is absent, there is release. Every view needs someone to own it, so the grip and the 'I' are one knot seen from two sides. The last clause closes a trap. Having understood, a listener might start forcing: clutching at the teaching, or throwing things away to prove detachment. Ashtavakra says to do neither. Take up nothing, drop nothing, and let it be easy. He says this because Janaka has asked how freedom is reached. The answer is that nothing needs reaching. The text asks only that the grip be seen for what it is, and that the one who grips be looked for and not found.
Someone wears tinted glasses for years and forgets they are on. Every wall and face looks that colour, and they call it the way things are. The glasses are the views. The wearer who stops noticing them is the 'I' that owns them.
1. Today, when someone disagrees with you, notice the moment your chest or jaw tightens. Name it silently: gripping a view. 2. Stay with that tightness for three slow breaths before you answer. 3. Ask yourself who is being defended. Look for that 'I' for a few seconds. 4. Do not force the view away. Let it sit loosely, and listen to the other person to the end of their sentence.
A retired schoolteacher sits in a village meeting. A younger man says the temple accounts were kept the wrong way. Her face heats. She has her answer ready before he finishes. The teaching would change that moment in steps. First she notices the heat, which is the grip. Then she sees that what is being guarded is less the accounts than 'I was right'. Then the view can stay in her hand without the hand closing on it. She can hear his point, keep her own, or change it, and none of those costs her anything. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind cornered over its opinions hears worse and answers more sharply, and that a loosened grip leaves room to listen. The limit is plain. The teaching does not say the accounts were right or wrong, and it does not make the sting of criticism vanish. It does not remove real disputes that still need settling, or call for ignoring a genuine error.
