When the Knots Loosen
Mundaka Upanishad 2.2.8
Meaning · English
The knot tied around the heart comes undone. Every doubt is cut through. And the weight of his actions wears away, once he has seen That, which is both the higher and the lower.
Three terms carry the verse. Granthi is a knot, something pulled tight until it will not give. Hridaya is the heart, the inner centre where a person feels who he is. Karma is action, along with the results that action leaves behind. Angiras tells Shaunaka what happens when Brahman, the one reality the Upanishad is pointing to, is seen. Brahman here is both para, the higher, and avara, the lower: the source and also what comes from it. The knot in the heart is the tight, mistaken sense that I am only this body and mind, cut off from everything. Seeing Brahman loosens it. Doubts end because they grew out of that knot. Karma wears away because the one who felt bound to it no longer stands where he stood. The reason is plain. Shaunaka asked what is worth knowing, and Angiras answers that this seeing is worth more than any further effort. It asks the listener to want direct sight and not settle for belief. Shankara reads the seeing as knowledge of the Self, which burns away ignorance, the root of doubt and of bondage. He reads the vanishing of karma as the ending of stored actions that have not yet begun to bear fruit.
A fisherman's net is hauled up wet and tangled, every knot pulled hard by the weight of the catch. Then one cord is cut at the right place and the whole mesh falls open. The tangle is the heart's tight sense of being separate, and the single cut is the seeing that loosens everything at once.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with a doubt that keeps returning, such as a decision you have gone over many times. 2. Write the doubt in one plain sentence on paper. 3. Beneath it, write what you are afraid of losing if you choose wrongly. Notice whether the fear is about the matter itself or about your picture of yourself. 4. Fold the paper and put it away. Over the coming week, notice whether the doubt grips less once you have named what it holds on to.
A woman sits on the edge of her bed at night, going over an argument with her brother for the tenth time. Each replay tightens something in her chest. She is not mainly thinking about the argument now. She is guarding a picture of herself as the wronged one. The Mundaka says that when the Self is seen, the knot of the heart loosens, doubts are cut and the pull of past actions fades. In her moment, that would begin with noticing that the tightness belongs to the guarded picture and not to the facts. She might see that the doubt is feeding on that guarding. Seeing it plainly can let the grip ease a little, and she might sleep. Ordinary experience confirms that a worry named and looked at usually holds less than one left circling in the dark. The limit is clear: the verse does not promise that the quarrel is mended, that her brother will call, or that sleeplessness which continues needs no doctor.
