Light Within the Sheath

Mundaka Upanishad 2.2.9

Meaning · English

In the highest golden sheath dwells Brahman, stainless and without parts. It is radiant, the light of all lights. This is what those who know the Self know.

Angiras is answering Saunaka, who asked what is worth knowing. Brahman is what the Upanishads name as the one reality beneath everything. Atman is the Self, a person's own inmost being. Four words carry the verse. Kosha is a sheath, a covering, as a scabbard holds a blade. Hiranmaya, golden, marks it as bright and precious, and para marks it as highest, the innermost. Niskala means without kala, without parts: nothing in it can be divided, added or worn away. Viraja means without rajas, without dust or passion: nothing stains it. The plain sense is that deep within a person, inside the finest covering, is Brahman, whole and unstained. It is bright, and it is the light by which other lights are lit. Angiras says this because Saunaka asked what is worth knowing. He points past body, mind and deeds, which change, to what does not. The last clause is the test: only those who know the Self know it. It is known by being recognised as oneself, not by hearing about it. Shankara reads the golden sheath as the intellect, shining with understanding, and Brahman as its own light within it. He reads "light of lights" as the source of the power in sun and fire to shine.

A small flame sits inside a closed brass lantern with a gold-tinted glass. The glass glows and the whole room is lit, yet the glow is borrowed. Take the flame away and the glass is dull. The glass is the sheath; the flame, whole and untouched by the room's dust, is Brahman.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes somewhere quiet with the lights low. Notice one thing you are aware of: a sound, the weight of your hands. 2. Then notice what is aware of it. Do not name it or explain it. Stay with that question for a minute. 3. Tomorrow, when someone praises or blames you, pause for one breath. Ask what in you was not changed by it.

A man sits in his parked car outside the house he grew up in. It has been sold, and the new owners are carrying in a sofa. He feels like a son, an owner, a failure, a boy, all in a minute. The verse speaks to him by asking what in him has not changed since he was that boy running up those steps. Step by step: he names each role he is holding, son, seller, mourner. He sees that each one came and can go. He notices that something watches all of them without being any of them. The Mundaka calls that the Self and says it has no parts and no stain. Ordinary experience agrees that a mind which stops rehearsing its worries grows quieter. The verse does not promise that the house comes back, that the grief shortens or that the ache will not return when he starts the engine. It does not replace a doctor or a friend if the sadness stays heavy for weeks. It gives him one place to stand while the rest moves.
