Borrowed Brightness

Mundaka Upanishad 2.2.10

No sun lights that place, no moon, no stars, no lightning flash, and still less a lamp or fire. Once that shines, everything else gleams in its wake. By its radiance this whole world is made bright.

Three words carry the verse. Bha means to shine, to be bright. Anubhati, built on it, means to shine after, to shine in the wake of something else. Bhasa is radiance, the light a thing gives off. Angiras answers Saunaka's question about what is worth knowing by pointing to Brahman, the text's name for the one reality behind everything. He says the sun, moon, stars, lightning and fire do not light that place. Their light does not reach it. The order is the other way round. When Brahman shines, all else shines after it, and the whole world is bright by its radiance. The reason is the problem the verses before it raise. A person who wants to know the highest looks for something brighter than the brightest thing he knows. Angiras says the brightest things are not bright of themselves. They borrow. So the search should turn from lamps to what lets anything be seen. Shankara reads the light as consciousness. For him the sun and the rest cannot illumine Brahman, because they appear only through the awareness that is Brahman. The verse asks the listener to stop treating bright objects as the source and to look toward what they depend on.

A small mirror hangs in a hallway and throws a bright patch of sunlight on the opposite wall. Cover the window and the patch vanishes, because the mirror never owned that light. The sun, moon and fire are the mirror. Brahman is the sun behind the window.

1. Tonight, sit for two minutes in a room with one lamp, then switch it off. 2. In the dark, notice that you are still aware: you know the room is dark, and you know you are sitting there. 3. Switch the lamp on again and notice that seeing the lit room needs the same awareness. 4. Once this week, look at the morning sun on a wall and ask quietly what lets you see it at all.

A man sits at home during a night power cut. The fan stops, the room goes black, and his phone shows five percent. His wife grows anxious and his child asks for a torch. He feels, for a moment, that without light everything has gone. The verse changes the moment in small steps. He notices that he still knows he is in the room, that he can hear his child, and that his awareness has not dimmed with the lamp. Light made the furniture visible, but the knowing was already there. The Mundaka, through Angiras, teaches that all bright things shine because of Brahman, and that Brahman is not one of them. Ordinary experience agrees that we can be awake in a dark room. Holding that lightly, he finds a little steadiness, lights a candle, and looks for the torch. The verse does not promise that the power returns sooner, that the child stops being afraid, or that fear leaves. It is a way of looking, not a repair for the wiring or a remedy for real distress.
