The Witness Who Does Nothing

Ashtavakra Gita 1.12

Meaning · English

The self is witness, all-pervading, whole, one, free, pure awareness, without action, without attachment, without craving, still. Only through error does it seem to live a worldly life. Rest in the self as unmoving, as awareness, without a second. Let go of the mistaken thought "I am only an appearance," and let go of the sense of what is outside and what is inside.

Four words carry the teaching. Sakshi, witness, comes from sa and akshi, "with the eye": the one who sees without taking part. Kutastha is the anvil, which stays put while hammers fall on it. It names what does not change. Bodha, awareness, comes from budh, to wake. Abhasa, appearance, is a shining-toward, a reflection that looks like the thing itself. Ashtavakra tells Janaka what the self is: one, whole, free, actionless, wanting nothing, still. It is the witness of everything and not a doer inside it. Worldly life, with its gains, losses and craving, seems to belong to the self only through bhrama, error. Then he asks Janaka to rest in that self as the unchanging awareness with no second beside it. The next clause names the error. It is the idea "I am an appearance": a body, a role, a mood that comes and goes. Ashtavakra asks Janaka to drop that idea, and also the feeling of outer and inner states, since both are seen and the self is what sees. This answers Janaka's question about how freedom is won. Ashtavakra's reply is that it is not won. What is already free only has to be recognised, so the whole teaching is about dropping a mistake.

A film plays on a cinema screen. A building burns, a flood rises, and the screen is never scorched or soaked. It holds every scene and is changed by none. The self is the screen: the scenes of a life cross it, and it stays one, dry and unmarked.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes in a quiet spot with your eyes open or closed. 2. Name what passes through: a worry, a sound, an ache. Say to yourself, "This is seen." 3. Ask, "What is it that sees?" Stay with that question for a minute without answering it. 4. During one irritation tomorrow, say silently, "I am watching this," before you speak.

A man sits in his parked car outside the hospital, hands on the wheel. His father is on the fourth floor. His chest is tight, his mind runs ahead through every bad outcome, and he cannot make himself get out. The verse would change the moment in small steps. He notices the tightness and the racing thoughts as things happening in front of him. He asks who is noticing them, and finds that this noticing has stayed steady all along while the fear rose. The text teaches that this witness is the self, free and untouched. He is less swallowed by the fear, and he opens the door. Ordinary experience agrees with one part of this: a feeling looked at from a step back usually grips less than a feeling one is lost inside. The verse does not promise that the fear will leave, that his father will recover, or that grief will be lighter later. It does not replace the doctors upstairs, whom he still has to go and listen to.
