Meaning · English
Dear one, rare is the fortunate person in whom, from watching how people act in the world, the wish to go on living, the hunger for pleasure and the thirst to know have all grown quiet. Having seen that all this is passing, spoiled by threefold suffering, without substance, blameworthy and fit to be left aside, such a person becomes still.
Three wants are named. Jivitecha is the wish to go on living. Bubhuksha is the hunger to enjoy, literally the wish to eat. Bubhutsa is the wish to know, to gather more learning. Ashtavakra says that in a rare person all three quiet down. The verb is shamyati, from sham, to grow calm, as a fire dies when it has no more fuel. Tapa-traya means threefold burning. The text says the world is spoiled by suffering of three kinds, as a house is spoiled by smoke. Asara means without sap or core, like a husk. How does the quieting come? The text answers: from watching how people behave in the world, and judging all of it passing, burning, empty, and to be given up. Ashtavakra is not scolding. He praises such a person as fortunate and rare. The teaching is that dispassion is not forced from outside. It comes when seeing is complete, and stillness follows from that seeing. This sits in a chapter on dispassion because Janaka asked how freedom is won. The answer is that it comes when craving loses its hold, and craving loses it when the world is seen as it is. The listener is asked to look at the world and let the looking do its work.
A child chases a soap bubble across the yard, sure it is a marble of glass. It lands on her palm, pops, and leaves a wet smear. She watches the next bubble drift past and does not run after it. The bubble is the world's pleasures. The smear is what they leave behind. Once handled truly, the chase quiets.
1. Choose one ordinary scene today, a market, a bus stop or a family meal, and watch it for ten minutes without joining in. 2. Notice each thing people reach for: a screen, a snack, praise, a bargain. Note how long each satisfaction lasts. 3. Tonight, write one line on what you saw lasting longest, and whether anyone was left wanting again.
A grandfather sits on a railway platform bench with nowhere to be. He watches the crowd: a man scolding his phone, a girl crying over a dropped sweet, two passengers shoving for the same door. Years ago he would have been in the shove. Now he sees the whole pattern, each person sure that the next thing grabbed will finally settle the wanting. Step by step, the text's teaching reads like this. First he watches without joining. Then he notices that each satisfaction ends and the wish returns. Then the wish loosens a little. Ordinary experience confirms that a craving looked at plainly often weakens. The text goes further and teaches that the quiet is complete when the seeing is. Ashtavakra's claim is large and the platform scene is only its small beginning. It does not remove grief, hunger, illness or the need to eat, work and see a doctor. The teaching does not say to stop caring for the body. It speaks of the grip that wanting has on the mind.
