Is there any time, any stage of life, in which the pairs of opposites do not touch people? Let them go, and live on what comes of itself, and perfection is reached. Seers, good people and yogis are of one mind on this. Having seen it, a person who has turned away from craving: who would not grow still?
Three words carry this. Dvandva means a pair, two things yoked together: gain and loss, heat and cold, praise and blame. Yathaprapta means what has come of itself, whatever arrives unasked. Nirveda is dispassion: a weariness with chasing, the colour gone out of craving, not hatred of the world. Ashtavakra asks Janaka a question first. Name one hour, one season of life, where the pairs are absent. The young have them, the old have them, the king and the beggar have them. None is ever finished. Ending the pairs by arranging life well cannot work, because the arranging is itself the next pair. So he points to another way. Look at the pairs and leave them be, without pushing one side away or grabbing the other. Live on what the day brings. The text calls that perfection, siddhi, which here means completeness, not a power. He adds that seers, good people and yogis agree. Once a person sees how the pairs run, dispassion comes, and stillness follows from it, so the closing question is rhetorical: no one would stay restless. He teaches this because Janaka asked how freedom is won. The answer is to stop waiting for a day when the opposites will end.
A boy on a seesaw thinks he will be happy once his end stays up. Then he sees the plank is hinged to the ground and cannot hold one side up for ever. Climbing off, he stands on level earth. The seesaw is the pairs, and the ground is the self that stays when he steps off.
1. Today, catch one small swing: a good message, then a worry about it; a cold morning, then a warm cup. Say quietly to yourself, "the pair has come." 2. For the next ten minutes, take whatever arrives without correcting it. Eat what is served and work with what is in front of you. 3. This evening, think back over the day and count how many swings came. Notice that each one passed without your pushing it.
A farmer stands at his field's edge in a season when the rain is late. All week he has begged for clouds. Now they gather, and he is already afraid of flood. His hope and his fear are one pair, and he has been living inside it for days. The verse's first question applies to him. Is there any season in a farmer's life without such a pair? Seeing that, he stops hunting for the year that will be free of them. He does what the day asks: checks the drains, sows what can be sown, eats when the food is ready. He lives on what comes, as the text puts it. Hope and fear still rise, but he has stopped feeding them, and the evening feels quieter than the week did. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: a mind that has stopped bargaining with the weather rests better. The verse does not promise rain, a good harvest or freedom from loss. It does not remove grief if the crop fails. It offers steadiness while the pairs keep coming.
