Who is not a teacher, if he has brought you to know consciousness apart from any form, and shown you the way across the world through weariness of it and an even mind? See the changes of the elements, and you, as only elements, as they truly are. In that very moment you will be released from bondage, and you will stand in your own nature.
Two Sanskrit words carry the verse. Nirveda is weariness with the world's round, the colour going out of it; it comes from a sense of being done with striving. Samata is evenness, the same mind in gain and loss. Together they are the means the first half names. The other word is bhutavikara, the changes of the elements: bhuta is what has come to be, vikara is its alteration. The first half asks who is not a teacher. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that anyone who makes you know consciousness as having no form, and who ferries you over the world by weariness and evenness, is a teacher. The title is earned by the help, not by robes. The second half gives the seeing itself. Ashtavakra tells Janaka to look at all that changes, body and world alike, and to see it as only the elements, nothing more, just as it truly is. Then he says the bondage drops in that same moment. Nothing waits to ripen. It is taught here because Janaka has asked how freedom is won, and the answer is that it is a seeing, not a journey. The text asks the listener to look at change and call it change, and so rest in svarupa, one's own nature, which is the witnessing consciousness.
A child is frightened by a shape in the dark corner of a bedroom. The light goes on and it is a coat over a chair. Nothing was removed; it was seen as it is. The elements in their changes are the coat, and the fear is the bondage that ends at once.
1. Tonight, pick one thing that worries you: a body ache, a bill, a quarrel. 2. Sit for five minutes and describe it to yourself in the plainest terms, as something that came, changes and will pass. 3. Notice who is doing the describing. Rest in that watching for a minute. 4. Do the same tomorrow with a different worry.
A man stands in the hospital corridor at two in the morning, waiting for news of his father's scan. His mind runs ahead, building scenes that have not happened. The verse would change this in steps. First he sees that his body is tired, cold and hungry, and these are changes of the body, nothing more. Then he sees that the fear is also something arising, shifting, and passing through. Then he notices that something is watching all of it, and that the watcher is not itself shaken. The text teaches that this seeing frees at once. It does not promise the scan will be clear, remove his grief if the news is bad, or replace the doctors who are caring for his father. Ordinary experience does confirm one small thing: a worry named plainly as a passing state often loosens its grip a little, even when nothing outside has changed.
