Imagined Limits, Resting Mind

Ashtavakra Gita 2.17

Meaning · English

I am awareness alone. Through ignorance I imagined limits upon myself. Reflecting on this always, I rest in that which holds no imagined divisions.

Three words carry the verse. Bodha means awareness, knowing, from budh, to wake. Matra means only, nothing more, so bodhamatra is awareness and nothing added. Upadhi means a limiting condition, something laid over a thing so that it looks other than it is. Kalpita means imagined, made up in the mind. Nirvikalpa is the state without vikalpa, without the mind's splitting and picturing. Janaka says he is awareness alone. Body, rank, name and kingdom were never part of what he is. They were limits he laid on himself through ajnana, not-knowing, which here means a missing recognition, not a lack of facts. Then he says how he lives with this: he reflects on it constantly, and so his footing is in the place where nothing is divided. Ashtavakra's teaching, in the verses before, is that the self is a witness already free. Janaka has just seen it, and this is his report. The verse answers the question of how freedom is won: it is not won, only seen through. What it asks of a listener is to look again at each limit and ask whether it was ever more than imagined.

A child puts on a bedsheet and a paper crown and for an afternoon is truly a ghost, then a king. The child never stopped being the child underneath. The cloth stands for the limits laid over awareness, and taking them off changes nothing in what was there.

1. Once today, when you catch yourself thinking a label about yourself, such as I am the one who always fails, or I am just a clerk, stop for a few breaths. 2. Ask quietly: who is aware of this thought? 3. Notice that the awareness itself has no job title, age or mood attached. 4. Repeat this once more before bed, for about one minute, and leave the label alone without arguing with it.

A man stands in the corridor of a hospital, waiting while his father is in surgery. His mind runs on one line: I am the son who was not there in time. The weight of that sentence presses on his chest and throat. The verse, as Janaka speaks it, would turn him toward the one who is hearing the sentence. Step by step: he notices the sentence is a thought; he notices he is aware of the thought, and of the chair, the smell of antiseptic and his own breathing; he sees that this awareness is not itself guilty or frightened. Ordinary experience confirms that naming a thought as a thought often loosens its grip a little. The text itself teaches more than that: that the limits were only imagined and awareness is what he is. It does not promise the surgery will go well, it does not remove his fear or grief, and it takes the place of neither the surgeon nor the nurse who tells him what to do next.
